Clearly wanted to stay in Dallas so interesting it’s only for 1 year. This just kicks the can down the road 6-12 months. But as others have said, Dallas will have more room the following season so perhaps that’s the strategy here. Will be interested to see if it says a topic of discussion all season and maybe becomes a distraction through.

Reminder he turned down $180M over 8 years from Seattle. He’s gambling on himself here but that’s a lot of $$ to walk away from. Clearly had zero interest signing there to walk away from that sort of payday.

I think if this was about getting out of Dallas he would have worked with his agent to find a trade that worked. Dallas was clearly willing to listen to offers.

He wants to stay, and this is the most painless way to get him to the big number he wants. He just has to hope he doesn't get a career ender between now and January when he's allowed to sign an extension.

Dallas cant afford to pay him what he wants this year so they settled on 12m for this year and a long term extension will be announced jan 1. He's not leaving Dallas

I honestly have to say, at $12M per the team and player should embrace a partnership style relationship. It would be more important to me to have an additional quality teammate than to shoot for the moon salary-wise and watch my teammates lose important games. Legacies aren't defined by salary [they can be un-done by salary] and he's already made enough to be financially secure.

I absolutely agree. He's already earned more than he can reasonably spend, and barring injury will be guaranteed generational wealth on his next deal. What's left to bargain for? Leave a few mil on the table each year so they can afford a supporting cast!
