Mariners Reportedly Willing to Trade Emerson Hancock

This is the kind of trade I would be all over if I was in the Cardinals front office. The Cardinals need controllable top-of-the-rotation starting pitching, and the Mariners need a hitter and a late-inning reliever.

I would be willing to gamble a high ranked prospect or two for a pitcher like Hancock. He's currently 27, with a 3.16 ERA in 19 starts and 105. IP, which comes out to 2.4 WAR per Baseball Reference.

He's under team control until 2031 and doesn't hit arbitration until 2028.

If he's available this deadline the Cardinals wouldn't be serious suitors. O'Brien could be the late inning reliever but who would be the bat? If Seattle trades Hancock this deadline it would be for win now ML talent, not prospects. If the Cards get a guy like that it would most likely be in an offseason trade.

A month ago O’Brian and Herrera could have almost got you Kirby but I’m not sure now it could get you Hancock. I had proposed a trade a while back where Cards sent those two to the Mariners with Kirby and Velequez going to Phillies for Painter and Miller.
Mariners looking for players with controllable years and Phillies looking to win now. This trade would have met both of those needs and gave the Cards two high upside prospects for pitcher and third base.

You think a contender is going to subtract a quality bat and reliever from their ML roster at the deadline? Almost never happens. Contenders trade prospects at the deadline.

This appeals to teams like the Cards who have ML players to trade that want a controlled arm for the future.

Interesting idea. Nootbaar to Houston and Paredes to Seattle…something like that. With a RP from the Cards heading to Seattle too. Probably one or two other prospect pieces needed to balance it all out.

Last offseason, some of CT was all on board with trading Donovan for Noah Cameron. Cameron's results have regressed this year - as expected.

Hancock is pitching better this year, but he's almost certainly not a 3.16 ERA pitcher going forward. More like a 4.00 ERA low #3/#4 SP at best.
