Re: Connor Bedard
Because he’s betting on himself for his next deal where he will make even more and also by signing the 5 year deal, it gives him an out in 5 years if the Hawks can’t become a consistent winner or contender. He’s the face of the franchise and one of the best young players in the game..Hawks are just doing what they had to do to take care of their franchise player.skilles wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 07:05 amWhat are those obvious reasons? Maybe Bedard asked for 3 years, Hawks wanted 7, so they met in the middle..that I haven’t seen reported, other than the Hawks wanted to sign him for 7. With max going to $22mil per next season, he could be looking at $25 mil per per in 5 years

To the thought that Bedard had all of the leverage and the Blackhawks had no leg to stand on, Meehan told Lazerus that the player was interested in a shorter-term deal. But Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson made the case for more term, and Bedard understood the significant of taking five years.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 07:24 am Maybe Bedard asked for 3 years, Hawks wanted 7, so they met in the middle..that I haven’t seen reported, other than the Hawks wanted to sign him for 7. “That would have really placed Connor in absolute control,” Meehan said. “But he became sensitive to Chicago’s need for stability and continuity. And Kyle felt he needed to send a signal internally and externally that Connor was there for not just a short period of time, but a longer period of time. As a result, we came to a conclusion and a consensus that five years was appropriate.”

I think it’s a win for both the player and the organization. Hawks keep their guy for at least the next 5 years and this is all behind them now. Up to the Hawks management to put together a winner now.BalotelliMassive wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 07:35 amTo the thought that Bedard had all of the leverage and the Blackhawks had no leg to stand on, Meehan told Lazerus that the player was interested in a shorter-term deal. But reading 4 pages of the Hawks board on this trade it's amazing to me how little concern there is with his durability which is really the only big thing in doubt.

Re: Connor Bedard
His durability probably doesn’t affect the negotiations a whole lot, he’s been very productive even with the injuries. If he was older it would play a much bigger role for sure but he just turned 21 a few days ago. He does feel like a guy that’s always going to be shelved for several weeks every year…similar to Jack Hughes but top talent always gets paid.dhsux wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 08:01 amWhelp there's another small matter in play, imo.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 07:40 amI think it’s a win for both the player and the organization. Re: Connor Bedard
My guess is he wanted 4 and they wanted 3 or 7.....no way he wanted 3 and the Hawks met in the middle at 5. More than likely (almost certainly) he wanted 4 and they wanted 7 and they manged to get him to 5. In no world would Bedard ever want 3. Personally I think its pretty easy(obvious) to figure out what the 2 sides would want in this situation. Bedard would want 4 and the Hawks would want 3 or 7Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 07:24 amBecause he’s betting on himself for his next deal where he will make even more and also by signing the 5 year deal, it gives him an out in 5 years if the Hawks can’t become a consistent winner or contender. I don't think he is betting on himself as I think it would be pretty stupid to turn down a guaranteed 30 million years 6 and 7 for a chance to make 50 million(probably more like 40 IMO) I don't think he did that at all.
5x15 = 75 + 25x2 = 50.....75+50 + 125
17x7 = 119
He didn't go 5 years to make more money, he went 5 year to have the option to play wherever he wants.
He could have got the same money guaranteed right now if that is what he wanted IMO and I think the Hawks would have actually preferred that.
What happened here IMO is exactly the same thing that happened to the Ducks without the paper work.

Well all we know is what has been reported. He’s already set for life with all his endorsement deals. I definitely think he’s eyeing a bigger contract in 5 years though and yes, the 5 years gives him an out if he wants to play in Vancouver.skilles wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 08:32 amMy guess is he wanted 4 and they wanted 3 or 7.....no way he wanted 3 and the Hawks met in the middle at 5. This is an awesome deal for both. He’s gonna be one of the faces of the league. Hopefully it works out for both. Maybe it allows for Gauthier to be signed for 12-13 now. I feel like Bedard is better than him.

Anton Frondell in 2 years.
Artyom Levshunov next year.
2 big time players. Will get paid IMHO.
Lesser extent--Oliver Moore will get big raise after next year.

I don't see anything massive...(maybe Anton) but I do think they're going to use next year's draft picks combined with prospects to trade for a juggernaut on offense. They have three first round picks in 27 and will probably add more at the deadline.

Re: Connor Bedard
Elias Pettersson and Connor Bedard have identical career point-per-game averages of 0.93 PPG. I was thinking of this kind of in a snarky way. That said....... As awful as Pettersson is perceived to be, and as down as I am on Bedard they have similar motivation to show what they can do and they both have very high potential. Pettersson to Chicago might be a good move.BalotelliMassive wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 09:51 amI don't see anything massive...(maybe Anton) but I do think they're going to use next year's draft picks combined with prospects to trade for a juggernaut on offense. Sure but you would prefer letting him get to free agency at 26 was not what it took to make him happy. You'd like for it to be a full term contract that made him happy.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑20 Jul 2026 09:48 amWell you also want to keep your franchise player happy.
