I have been clear on this. When I refer to TOP5, I am referring only to a player that the Blues select TOP5. Schenn was not TOP5, and neither is MacTavish.PregnantNun wrote: ↑17 Jul 2026 23:01 pm I'll never forget when we acquired a TOP 5 PICK and you complained. That's when I knew.

Re: Blues - Building via the "DISCARD PILE"
That makes zero sense. A top5 pick is a top5 pick no matter who makes it. So if somehow the Blues traded for Crlebrini tomorrow he wouldn’t count and would be a discard since we didn’t pick him?a smell of green grass wrote: ↑18 Jul 2026 06:29 amI have been clear on this. Ok, let me explain slowly. There are two basic types of Top5 picks: Successful and Failed.
Failed: Top5 picks that have proven to be not that special. Good maybe, but nothing special. Top5 picks that are traded in their prime typically means a failed Top5. Examples are Schenn and MacTavish.
Successful:
These are players who are HOF material from Day 1. Their team would NEVER trade them. The Blues could offer their whole roster for Celebrini, and the sharks would not do it.
Maybe try crocheting if you don’t understand.

Here is your next lesson.
What separates the SUPERSTAR GMs from the rest is the ability to select the Successful TOP5 players and avoid the EVENTUAL failed ones.
The Blues GM has never once had an opportunity to make such selection. The BLues are compensated by the NHL to let all the other teams enjoy the NHL Draft. Armstrong throws darts at the 3rd-liners in the middle of Round 1. Some BluesTalkers think he is special, and he has not even been sitting at the Big Boy table. NOT ONE TIME IN 20 YEARS.

Wow!
Not only does the NHL pay out the Blues for not having top 5 picks, but now any Top 5 drafted player who gets traded is a wasted draft pick. My mind is blown.

Re: Blues - Building via the "DISCARD PILE"
It happens often. In the TOP5 picks, there may only be 3 really special elite HOF talent. GMs can get fired if they have the opportunity to select one, and MISS.
Army has NEVER HAD TO MAKE SUCH A SELECTION. As I said, he throws darts at the 3rd liners. Anybody can do that.

Love this post. Of course he couldn’t respond to it.zamadoo wrote: ↑17 Jul 2026 05:57 am Only four roster players from FLA's Cup teams were drafted by FLA, and one of them was Spencer Knight, the goalie taken 13th OA who is now a Blackhawk, meaning only 3 remain, and FLA just added even more from the discard pile.
Vegas had only two players they drafted on their Cup team, and their entire team was made of actual discards from the expansion draft. Everything they've done has been trades and signings.
Carolina had 6 and 7 of their own draftees in each of their two Cups. One of those players (Nikishin) is being discarded. "The rest of that legendary 2006 core—including captain Rod Brind'Amour, franchise icon Glen Wesley, and forward Justin Williams—were all acquired via trades."
Buffalo discarded ROR and Eichel so they could win the Cup as 1Cs for other teams, while BUF continues to draft and discard. Also of note is that they discarded some players for ROR who went on to win the Cup in COL. Congrats to them for finally making it through a round of the playoffs for the first time in 19 years, using the "build from within model" as they have in the past to win playoff games, but no Cup, despite having 11, 14, and 12 drafted players on each of their 3 most recent playoff runs (2006, 2007, 2026).
COL had 5 of their own drafted players for their recent Cup win. 6 if you count Byram, who was injured and missed the playoff run. They discarded 3 of those 6.
The Blues had 13 drafted players on their 2019 roster, which added key pieces to win it all, before they discarded several of those players. They currently have 8 of their own draft picks on the current roster, with a stocked pipeline. They stole two top players from EDM, who has now only 4 of their own drafted players on their current roster. Have acquired a solid 2C (like Schenn). Have #1C in player they drafted. Have #3C in player they drafted (who could someday be #1C). and we still have Sunny![]()

I think it depends on who they are traded for...It's quite telling that McTavish was dumped for draft picks, in essence a "do-over". The Ducks couldn't get rid of him fast enough.

PIT - Crosby, Malkin
EDM - McDavid, Draisitl
And I could go on an on with how the best teams built their teams starting with elite HOF talent.
Meanwhile, the Blues best player is Robert Thomas. Most know him by Doug Armstrong's description: "Our best players are being outplayed consistently by the other team's best players when the games matter".
St Louis Blues core....
1. Robert Thomas
2. A bunch of Young Guys that were literally BENCHED on their first team--never having proven anything.

Just because Q didn’t like him doesn’t mean anything. Sutter couldn’t get rid of Brind’Amour fast enough either. Yeah, you were clear on how you were moving your goalposts after we acquired your TOP 5 PICK. You're busted. Give it up. One thing I've noticed about arrogant dumb people is they double down and dig in their heels when they are exposed for what they are. Absolutely convinced you'll eventually be seen as the smartest guy in the room instead of the dumbest. That's you. Keep swingin slugger.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑18 Jul 2026 06:29 amI have been clear on this. When I refer to TOP5, I am referring only to a player that the Blues select TOP5.
