I'm sure he is trying to milk every penny as he should, this is probably going to be the biggest decision of his life.

Well sure he is. This I agree with. And the Blues are trying to pay him the least they can and get him for the most years they can.

It's a business. Usually each side has to work towards the middle to strike a deal. As we all know.

Nobody is suggesting there is any existing ill will. The point is that if the two go into a hearing and the Blues lay out all the reasons in detail why he’s not good enough it’s going to be a tough start to the relationship.

I guess I'll just move on. I can't understand this post.

Appreciate the discussions.

I'll close with my view on it and move on. The Blues aren't going to go to the hearing (if it gets that far) and tell McMichael why he's "not good enough."

They are going to go there and say "players X, Y and Z are getting paid A, B and C. Therefore we are willing to pay you this."

Some of you make it sound like the Blues are going to tell him "well, you don't shoot well enough from the left dot, and you're too soft in the third period and you're just not good enough to make 7 million a season."

They're going to compare him to some comparable contracts and that's that.

I respectfully disagree with you somewhat…
The fact is that comparing someone to other players in the league is only one thing that teams do to help the arbitrator determine a players value.
If the Blues didn’t say something like “though player “x” scored 30 goals last season, he also was a minus 20 which was the worst +/- on the team. We think he can do better in the future but his 200 ft game isn’t there yet”

I believe a Cardinal player last season complained about his arbitration hearing. He said it really bother him what the team said about him and he couldn’t help but take it personally.

I think it’s only natural to feel that way. It’s probably why teams and players choose to settle before the hearing ever happens. Mozeliak his last few seasons with the club preferred arbitration. Mo was famous for tripping over nickels to save pennies. That is not good for a team dynamic.

Just my two cents.

If arbitration was a good idea it would happen more.

His shooting percentage is significantly lower from the left side. He led his team in giveaways in the 3rd period. His faceoff percentage was below league average levels in the last 10 minutes of the game. His prior club didn't use him in x,y,z situations where a player expecting a salary of x dollars would be expected to do. (I'm making all of this up, for reference).

You can use legal and statistical language to explain in great detail why the player isn't good enough. It's not going to make the player feel great.

Not a bad read. The article is just a year old.

This is the crux of it.

In an adversarial process (like arbitration), neither side actually moves to the middle.

The Blues *aren't* trying to convince CM to accept an offer. They're not arguing why they like him. They're trying to convince a judge that CM deserves less than CM is asking for.

Both sides do the exact opposite of what you described. There doesn't need to be any prior bad feelings - telling an elite athlete he's not as good as he thinks he is will create plenty if bad blood.

We didn't get him for his play. We got him because that's the best army could do. With a guy they tried to shelf for a year and a half. All Because they didn't like him

That's wild. Especially the stats on players who get traded after arbitration. I couldn't finish it, I got to the point about using mediation instead. Good read, thanks for that.

Seems to me all parties are aware of precisely what the process is and precisely what to expect. Any agent should have his client fully informed of all tactics and procedures. Close players should be advising their mate as well.

Short of rude or really derogatory positions from management I can't see how anything of really long term harmful damage should come of it, particularly when a player asks for it.

I get the human nature side but if I ask for it i better be prepared to receive it.

I heard on a show on NHL Network Radio yesterday that the GM's and players don't even go to these arbitration meetings anymore and it is 100% based on statistics so a lot of times it's just the agent and assistant GM attending.

Agreed. From the article
numerous accounts of arbitrations from players and managers have been shared over the years, and they tend to have an underlying theme of humiliating the players involved.
