The NHL loves to recycle old front office guys and coaches. I’m sure every sport does it, but Hockey is the only one I pay attention to and it seems like these guys sure do make their rounds.

Not quite on topic, but in my experience, hockey players are the nicest, most personable major league athletes you’ll ever meet. I got the privilege of meeting Reed Low, Jamie Rivers, and Al MacInnis earlier this year at a Blues practice. They were all absolutely super! Many years ago, I met Gretzky at O’Hare airport. Wayne is a pretty quiet, low key guy, but he was very nice as well.

Not quite on topic, but in my experience, hockey players are the nicest, most personable major league athletes you’ll ever meet. Wayne Babych long time ago at an elementary school awards function.
Bernie Federko at Carson's the year after the Oates trade.
Al MacInnis late night at Lambert. Were waiting at luggage turnstile when my wife pointed him out. Short on paper an pen, he autographed my daughter's Winnie-the-Pooh coloring book with a crayon.

All very polite and decent people.

Years ago at McGurks I ran into a table of Blues players - Jackman, Reaves, Mayers, Legace. I became a huge Manny Legace fan that night. I yelled Go Blues as I walked past their table and instead of ignoring my drunken idiocy, Legace called me over and he and I shot the sh*t for several minutes. I don’t remember why, but his dad was there too and he couldn’t have been nicer either. Really was a cool experience.

Have met Mac a couple of times too and he’s, no surprise, a super nice man.

The only Blues player I ever had kind of a downer experience with was Jackman. He was very distantly related to a member of my extended family (through marriage) and he came to a couple family events over the years. Wasn’t rude, but just could not have been less interested in talking to any of us. One event in particular, his wife was up mingling and chatting and he sat in the corner by himself all night. No attempt to interact or be social. So again, not a jerk, just no personality whatsoever. Same went for the night at McGurks.

JD was great, was always a big fan. He managed the social media era of the Blues very well. He sold the fan base on the kids for sure. “Come grow with us” was very much needed. Always the professional, always loved JD, even if he had to spin things as being better than what they actually were 20 years ago.
I always remember the WJC game, several months after drafting EJ and he made the biggest boneheaded play that would cause anybody watching to actually wonder if he had any hockey sense whatsoever. Within an hour of that game being over, JD released a statement to calm the masses, saying that he reached out to EJ regarding what happened in that game.

They were extraordinarily nice & chatted to us for 5-10 minutes. Messier took off his ring and let us pass it around and take a look at it. Nothing but good things to say about them.

Again, my memory is creaky. Was it during the Boy Band Era that Blues gave out — or made somewhat cheaply — food at games? Same era as free tacos for scoring five (I think) goals?

Was at that game with my dad. I think he only scored 4 that night…I remember one of the goals in the second period, they didn’t call it on the ice and Gretzky was banging on the glass at the goal judge like a mad man but they eventually stopped play and credited him with the goal. Also remember Schofield and Semenko having a tilt that night. Was a great night though because my dad wasn’t the biggest hockey fan , he was becoming a fan because of my interest so I wanted to take him to see the greatest player in the world and the Great one delivered that night. Good times for sure.
