Between the whining and teeth-gnashing about a completely harmless contract, along with people breathlessly asking Tim why he thinks the Sunny signing leads to a Nikishin trade...this thread has been fairly entertaining . Good grief, drop the puck already, it's going to be a long July and August in the Asylum.

I LOVE the signing. Steen has made it clear that he values the St. Louis Blues culture, and Sunny embodies that. Plus he's one of the smartest players out there. Even if he doesn't have much left in the tank, he'll be a great mentor and culture carrier regardless of whether he's in St. Louis or Springfield. Dude just loves the St. Louis Blues, and the coaches always seem to put him on the ice in critical situations, so I'm not going to worry to much about him being on a league-minimum two-way contract. Steen did him a solid, love to see the club take care of guys like Sunny, and the cost is extremely low. Always drove me kind of nuts when Army would emotionlessly jettison heart-and-soul guys like Maroon and Perron to free up cap space for some scrub.

It’s not the money, it’s sucking up a roster spot either here or in Springfield. There’s some validity to the mentor thing, but fine, make him a coach then, he doesn’t need to be on the ice.

Totally, I would hate to see him taking a roster spot from some tweener on the Blues or some 28 year-old career AHLer in Springfield who is just trying to hang on before he's relegated to beer league.

Even the tweener will be faster than Sunny.

I have to agree with you Skilles.

Many seem to think this is some kind of charity play by the Blues and while they might have a soft spot for him this is a 2 way deal that is up to Sunny to make or break, like any other 2 way player.

I can tell ya'll Monty likes this player and imo he had a lot of say in presenting the contract.

This is kind of my point...the Blues are trying to win and make the playoffs. Let's say hypothetically that Dylan Peterson on the 4th line instead of Sunny gives the Blues the best chance of winning. If that's the case, they're going to play Dylan Peterson. Sunny isn't "blocking" anyone.

You think that a one year two-way contract for an established and well liked veteran player who is likely done as an NHLer but will still push for a spot with 100% effort, is an exclusive practice of the St. Louis Blues? Wow.

I don't know why everyone is upset about this, it's a 2 way contract for a pressbox guy. If you can milk 40 games out of Sunny and keep him healthy, hypothetically you have a defensive dynamo for your 4th line that can play above his skis for a couple games. 2 years ago they had a breakdown of the 5 best defensive forwards and Sunny showed up on that list. The expected goals per minute while he was on the ice was amazing.

That being said, I wouldn't be happy if they thought it was a starting a role which they clearly don't. If he were to not clear waivers, than that just says the Blues signed a guy that the rest of the league think is a NHLer at a league minimum, which again goes to show the Blues made a smart move. I think Sunny's role is ultimately to be a player coach on the ice and We will see him with otter at some point if not right away.

I was a big Sunny fan back in the day, but yeah given how much Monty loves him, I don’t want him out there getting 18 minutes a night. I’d rather see Kasamaki out there.
