Canes were contemplating some Jedi mind tricks

Post by Pierre McGuire »

Canes were mulling offersheeting a player and then trading that player to another club. What an absolute crazy offseason this has been. Would love to know what player that was and how that would have gone over with the NHLPA even if it appears to be within their right to do so.

That would be allowable but super shady unless the player was on board with the entire set of moves.

Do that without the player’s consent and you’re going to end up an org players don’t trust and don’t want to go to.

I thought if you OS a player you had to keep them for at least one year/season?

That would have been greasy haha. This offseason certainly fulfilled my entertainment needs/wants. Most interesting offseason in a looong time.

That’s if you match. There’s no restriction on the team that successfully signs a player via offer sheet.

I believe they said it was Mintyukov from the Ducks they were targeting.

That would explain why Verbeek hurried to sign him to a big contract after the Carlsson offer sheet. It was rumored Mintyukov was getting one as well.

I think it would be more interesting to see who didn't have their own draft picks to offer sheet him themselves. Man, after Carlsson, you'd have to look at yourself and wonder what you did. Having an offer sheet player flipped after having to match THAT contract. It actually looks personal.

i'd guess that despite a lack of rules around it, there would be some level of play from the NHLPA to close it after the first attempt at that occurred. Don't think the NHL would be that adamant at not closing it as well, so the first time it happens may be the last time.

It would seem to me that something whould have had to be mentioned in the discussions between the player and the Canes. Or am I missing something here.

Very possible but I haven’t see the full story reported.
