I figured he would retire and possibly join the coaching staff in some capacity. But a two-way deal gives me the impression he might be something of a player/coach. No idea why people are freaking out over this! He’s a perfect mentor for the guys in Springfield if that’s the way it works out.

This team moving forward has no need for that type of situation..get the best players on the ice. If Sunny is around to be on LTIR as part of the support structure for the younger players, that's fine. If they expect him to play at the NHL level outside of extreme emergency duty, they're fooling themselves. I believe they know he's not an NHL player any more.

I’ve read all kinds of comments and see nobody panicking at all. It’s just a very unnecessary signing is all. I’m very happy Sunny has decided to set his roots in STL in retirement. He’s been a great asset to the team and community. He, however, does not deserve to be in the NHL with this organization in 2026-27, nor is it doing the team any good.

2-way is not a nice gesture…

A 1-way would mean he gets a NHL salary even in Springfield. 2-way means he gets less if he goes down! Granted it’s a big salary by AHL standards.

I have zero issue with Swedish players, but handing them contracts when they are past their prime on a rebuilding team, because they are Swedish, is just ridiculous. I certainly hope Steen isn’t just targeting Swedes.

The dude isn't going to want to play in Springfield. I can't see why he would want to do that anyway. His value is being with the NHL team I would think. Who knows.

We had 10 open contract slots for next year.
I'm honestly a little surprised that we haven't signed more bodies for Springfield, even with the glut of prospects we have down there. The kids need to push for spots, not have them handed to them.

You’re probably correct, but it’s weird; I’ve been following them for 36 seasons, and I’ve never heard anything about any Blues GM targeting players of their specific origin until recently with Steen. It’s discussed A LOT that we are turning into the St. Louis Swedes.
