Can anyone name the players that have been given 10% of the cap at age 21?

you're probably looking at maybe 10% possibly 15% of all hockey players that will be able take this gamble to hold off signing and describe it as a reasonable risk
And of those 90-120 players the vast majority will likely not do it
IMO

I do think that Snuggerud will be the highest paid player on the team real soon. It was inevitable that someone will get more than Thomas. The dramatic rise in the cap recently has insured it. I think he signs an extension for under 10 million but not much less. Sadly, the only thing in sports that is certain is major increases on ticket prices.

His stats the next 2 years won’t matter as much as you’d expect for his salary. Young players are now being paid based upon their potential star player upside. It’s a disaster for a team to spend years of time and money drafting and developing a player, and the player leaves for an offer sheet just before breaking out. Teams are choosing to overpay and keep young players with upside.

lol yes they will, his stats the next 2 years will be how his future potential is evaluated.zoiks wrote: ↑09 Jul 2026 13:37 pmHis stats the next 2 years won’t matter as much as you’d expect for his salary. His stats this season will not only matter, they will be the biggest factor in his next contract.

“Matching the offer sheet was an easy decision, as [general manager Pat Verbeek] has intelligently left enough cap space to give us the ability to retain Leo,” Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli said in a statement.

You have to remember that most teams, especially the top teams, won't have the cap room for a contract that large, and it would have to come from a lesser team. I would be more than satisfied and take the 4 number-one picks.

Adios. He's a product of Thomas and Broberg.
Carbonneau could score 40 on that line.

Gotta go off %, Thomas signed for about 10% of the cap when he signed long term. 10% of the cap in 27/28 will be 11.3 so that would be roughly the 27/28 equivalent of the Thomas contract.rangergiff wrote: ↑09 Jul 2026 13:31 pm I do think that Snuggerud will be the highest paid player on the team real soon. Pretty short list and that is for 10% not the % people are acting like the Ducks are crazy for not offering.....10.4 is 10%bluetunehead wrote: ↑09 Jul 2026 13:47 pmMight have missed one or two, but here is the list:

Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑09 Jul 2026 12:23 pm He can pop in 25-30 goals and simply wait for an offer sheet. Maybe we get lucky and get him for $12-13 mil but if you are Snuggerud why wouldn’t you just wait and see. It’s the Wild Wild West out there right now. Our $8 mil per year player is over in St. Louis
If someone wants to offer him 12 million I'll sure as hell take FOUR 1st rounders with our amatuer scouting staff.NHL offer sheet compensation for the 2026 offseason scales with the contract’s Average Annual Value (AAV) as outlined by Puckpedia and detailed in Sportsnet:
Up to $1,575,969: None
$1,575,969 to $2,387,832: 3rd-round pick
$2,387,832 to $4,775,666: 2nd-round pick
$4,775,666 to $7,163,498: 1st- and 3rd-round picks
$7,163,498 to $9,551,332: 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-round picks
$9,551,332 to $11,939,166: Two 1st-, one 2nd-, and one 3rd-round picks
$11,939,166 or more: Four 1st-round picks
This is going to be the next big thing if GMs want to start poaching good, not great, players. Take the four 1sts.

I agree. The concept is called "risk-adjusted-return."
Additional thoughts on various comments in the thread above...
Beyond what he has or has yet to accomplish so far, Snuggerud has not played a higher-valued/difficult-to-fill position -- Center-man.
Thomas is not the same talent as Carlsson.
That list of highest earners is populated with those having many seasons in the NHL and with very many whom were practically considered "elite" talent right from the early and young start of their NHL careers.
Maybe Verbeek screwed-up? Maybe the Owners were pulling the strings?

I disagree. This has always been the case with most professional sports leagues that incorporate a draft process to acquire young, amateur talent.zoiks wrote: ↑09 Jul 2026 13:37 pmHis stats the next 2 years won’t matter as much as you’d expect for his salary. It’s a disaster for a team to spend years of time and money drafting and developing a player, and the player leaves for an offer sheet just before breaking out. Teams are choosing to overpay and keep young players with upside.
For a some poorly run baseball franchises, they’d intentionally draft lesser players with a Top Pick purely because of slot values and a desire to spread their full allotment to players with signability concerns. Therefore, they could target high profile but riskier HS players later in the draft to entice them to forego college commitments.
The Pirates had an issue where they kept drafting near the top, spending much of their organizational budgets on prospects that might not even make it to the Bigs.
The worst NFL also found themselves paying top dollar to their Top Picks and struggled to improve the rest of the team after shelling out rich contracts to Rookies who’d never played a down.
It’s tough to acquire star players, let alone young star players. In almost every sport, a star player rarely hit Free Agency unless they’re close to being over the hill. When they somehow do become available, teams will pay a kings ransom for the last couple years in their twenties and basically until retirement.
This strategy was closer to sabotage, because it was a Hail Mary prayer by Philadelphia to acquire Carlsson. It was always going to hurt whoever got him in the short term, but clearly both teams felt it was worth it.

Re: Ducks match the offer sheet. Carlsson stays.
Snuggerud is gonna have to have a hell of a season for someone to give up for 1st round picks which means offering more that 12 million
Jimmy likely falls in range of the compensation protection mechanism.
The compensation table needs another level added.
The door that has been opened here really only applies to very high level young centers IMO. Possibly a d but that is probably even more rare.
