Now it should be clear to all how the Johnston contract is an unmitigated disaster.

At this point, with the dollar commitment, they'd have to take Buch back for us to be able to sign our players we want to deals. Seems more likely that this was a deal we were entertaining prior to bringing in Carlo, and are no longer entertaining, if i were to guess.

Holy mega turd. We gave this guy 2 mil. a year for 3 freaking years.son_of_foolsgold wrote: ↑05 Jul 2026 09:36 amMuch better investment than the $6 mil for the god-awful Ross Johnston.
It's more then crazy anyone would think this is a good move.
You don't get team toughness from one guy, and giving 2/3 for some protection against the one or two teams in the league that may have a guy or who may check Little Snuggs hard. Is plain Dumb and from all the boneheads on our board who like this move. It's St Louis hockey fan dumb.

Re: Hurricanes Reveal Condition to Acquire Nikishin
The Blues have 10.2MM in cap space.
McMichael is going to get 6-7MM based on the deal Bourque just signed.
That will only leave 3-4MM in space. Certainly not enough to trade for both Nikishin and Kotkaniemi. Even moving Krug to LTIR won't open enough space.
Something like Pius Suter would have to go back to Carolina.
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on all this.

Hmm.
So, a third overall pick in the NHL draft, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, is not living up to his lofty draft position?
I thought you had to pick in the top 5 in order to secure good players?
JK's status so far:
4th in games played.
10th in points.
And most likely will be sliding further down that list of players.
Just a thought.

Just because a team is saying that to make a trade, a team has to take a bad contract in the deal doesn’t mean it will actually happen. This is just a negotiating tactic. The trade return for Carolina will be abysmal if they require that bad contract be included in the deal.

Rumors Canes' want Neighbours or Dvorsky in the trade. Include Neighbours to balance out the cap. Flip Kotkaneimi to a team near the cap floor for future considerations.

They can “want” all they would like. If they want to dump JK as part of a deal, then they can have Suter & Toro, or Buchnevich. Otherwise, drop the JK request or kick rocks. Blues just need to move on here.

If it were so easy to just "flip" JK, CAR would have done so already and wouldn't be mucking up the Nikishin process by forcing teams to take JK on.
Nobody wants JK.

Buch would be my preference. Slowing down but in the right situation could be valuable.Backesdraft wrote: ↑05 Jul 2026 10:23 amBut they could IF they send a contract back to Carolina. Not that I’m saying they should or shouldn’t add Nikishin, just saying there is a way to make it work if Carolina takes money back.UMR-alum-05 wrote: ↑05 Jul 2026 10:07 amThe Blues don't have the cap to acquire Nikishin, sign him, trade for Kotkaniemi and his contract, and also sign McMichaelrangergiff wrote: ↑05 Jul 2026 09:48 am I was on the fence already about Nikishin but having to take "JK" back at 4.8 million for the next 4 years pretty much kills it for me.

There's an entire other thread about this where I went through the financials in detail and several of us looked at it and discussed it.noted wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 14:16 pmA roster forward AND a roster dman would be included in deal. Why not? Suter, Lindstein and a pick is doable. Not advocating per se, more trying to predict what they might be discussing.UMR-alum-05 wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 15:03 pmThere's an entire other thread about this where I went through the financials in detail and several of us looked at it and discussed it.noted wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 14:16 pmA roster forward AND a roster dman would be included in deal. Why would you ever do that deal? The Blues would be getting hosed.Army's Mom wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 16:21 pmWhy not? Suter, Lindstein and a pick is doable. If they want to unload that dog of a contract….then they aren’t getting much in return IMO.
What has Lindstein done that makes you feel that he can’t be a top 4 defenseman?
