St. Louis Blues: B+

Post by opti mist »

The Blues needed centers, a veteran defenseman and toughness, and they got all three. They traded for Anaheim’s Mason McTavish, who will be the No. 2 center, and drafted centers Tynan Lawrence (No. 11 overall) and Maddox Dagenais (No. 16). They traded for defenseman Brandon Carlo, which will allow 2024 first-round pick Adam Jiricek to grow at his own rate. And they signed enforcer Ross Johnston, who will make opponents think twice. None of the moves were flashy, but they were necessary.

B+ seems a little generous, IMHO.

I would say B- for now, elevating to a B if MM can hold down the 2C role until DD forces the issue.

The grade is about process and potential and not results bc you can’t measure results until they play games.

IMO, the grade is pretty accurate. The Blues had specific needs and they addressed those needs. Added depth at the C position and added a solid RH Dman. Now all we need is for McTavish, McMichael and Carlo to be what we hope they are.

Sounds about right. We upgraded our 2 biggest needs in C and RD. Lawrence is a great pick at an important position. Seems pretty good to me.

Gonna go with the B+ for now and see if the final exam can get them to an A+.

As always, these stories lack any true insight.

The most noticeable aspect of this draft is that the great re-whatever was supposed to fill all these same holes. And yet, here we are…. Fans are just supposed to be happy that the Blues are potentially filling the biggest potholes as though this is some new revelation

Such [nonsense] Blues coverage. So lame.

Still mad that other NHL teams get benefit amd promise and excitement from the NHL draft—while the Blues are fed little debbie desserts and told it is wonderful. For 20 years now.

I dont disagree, I guess Im just more skeptical on the extent of the upgrade. If McTavish is as motivated as I think, can add a step, and commits to getting back on D, he'll stick as 2C and its a big win. If he comes in without having done the work to get quicker, it could backfire.

If MM doesnt seize the role, then we're back to either DD (who is likely fine, but also needs to grow into the role) or CM (a player better suited to the wing).

Either way, we're deeper at center so I'll go with a positive grade, but how positive remains to be seen. JMO.
