Pat Verbeek

Post by billybaseball »

Needs to be fired tomorrow. Word is that Mintyukov is about to accept an offer sheet also. This is all due to Verbeek not negotiating in good faith with his prospects. This was an issue with McTavish last offseason. He has not been a good GM at all since taking over

It's over in Anaheim. Waiting to hear Gauthier has accepted an offer sheet.

I will say, when reading about McTavish, I came across some info that Verbeek cherishes his own draft picks more than others that came before. It seems maybe the feeling is mutual? That said, I know he drafted Carlson, so PHI is kind of sticking the knife in the chest here that could force a full rebuild with Verbeek and Q (if he lasts through it and may not have been expecting). Or they get everyone signed and move on smartly....

Gauthier isn’t offer sheet eligible. You need 3 accrued seasons, he only has 2.

Same reason why Snuggerud won’t be offer sheet eligible a year from now (in the event the Blues haven’t re-signed him before then, which they should).

Ah gotcha. Thanks again.

Lucky for them, but they still need to sign him long term to a reasonable deal after he just scored 41 goals. If Carlson isn't matched, I wonder how motivated he will be to do so.

I think Verbeek would’ve made a good GM 20 years ago. Maybe even 10. But he either needs to adapt to the current reality or the Ducks are going to be screwed.

As yes, Verbeek is known to really try to get his young prospects on as low of contracts as possible. You don’t want to be loose with your money/cap space but go too far in the other direction and players aren’t going to want to play for you as they’ll feel disrespected, under appreciated etc.

For the record, Carlsson wanted to extend earlier this season and it was Verbeek that said he wanted to hold off on negotiations until after the season. Just get it done!

Now he has this mess and Gauthier and Mintyukov left to sign as well. Word is 4 teams have already sent Mintyukov offer sheets as well…

I knew that about Gauthier, but was not aware about Snuggs. That makes me feel better about my post in the other thread, where I was worried about next season with Neighbours, Snuggs, Hofer and Mailloux all as RFAs.

The Ducks are going to match Carlsson. They kind of have to or face a major setback without a 1C. Verbeek is going to do it through gritted teeth, but he’ll do it.

I’m more interested in seeing what happens with Mintyukov now.

Assuming it's going to take 7 x 7.16 for Anaheim to decline to match on Mintyukov;
What teams have their own 1st & 3rd picks as well as cap space/need?
How about Nashville or Detroit?
Pittsburgh does not have their own 3rd. Nor does San Jose.
Seattle has 3 LHD but Dunn in his in walk year. Their best D prospects are RHD

I'm thinking it's time for Yzerman to step up.

Do we have our third? I wouldnt mind seeing Broberg, Mintyukov, and Lindstein on the left side here.

If Anaheim matches, it really eats up a lot of their cap. Verbeek really screwed himself.

Yes, we do.

I’m not sure I’d trade a 1st and 3rd for Minty though. Maybe though. It’s close.

The problem is the picks sent via offer sheets have no protection. So let’s say we get Minty but then underperform again, we could end up giving Anaheim a high pick. And if we won the lottery…oh boy! We’d be giving them a 1st or 2nd overall pick.

In the end, I probably wouldn’t bother. He’s good not but amazing and we’re pretty set at LD.

Also, before anyone asks, no, an offer sheet in the 2nd round pick range wouldn’t work. For one, the max for that range is $4,775,666 and Minty will likely command more than that. But even if he would sign for that amount, we don’t have our 2nd and would need to get it back like we did 2 years ago with Pitt. The problem? It’s Anaheim that owns it from the Fowler trade. So no way they’d trade that back to us now haha!

Does the signing bonus count against the cap?

Pretty sure you can't circumvent the salary cap by giving a player a larger bonus to make the AAV lower.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but the cap hit is $18m a yr for the next 5yrs. the $39m in the 1st 12months is to F Anaheim over (trying to come up with that kind of money in a short period).

I could be wrong, but I think you’re correct. Salary and signing bonus count against the cap. Performance bonuses do not, but I “think” they carry to the next seasons cap hit iirc. For example, look at the contract Ovie just signed. $4.25m cap hit but he has an additional performance bonus of $4.75m. That would hit them the following year I believe.
