Makar and Hughes?

Post by Frank Underwood »

Sorry for starting a new thread, but thought this was an interesting enough topic to justify it. If Byram gets $12.5 mil AAV, what the heck does that do to the asking price for Makar and Hughes? I would have thought both of those guys would be in the $14-$15 mil range before today. That suddenly feels low to me, which is kind of amazing.

Makar is said to be looking far north of Kaprizov’s deal. I’ve seen $18-20mil per year
Won’t be long and we will have $30mil per year players like the NBA

Their asking price, is whatever they want. They are the two best defensemen in the game and if you let them go there's no replacing them. Hughes is on a team with Kaprizov who is signed for $17M AAV. He has every right to ask for something in that neighborhood if not higher. Now they could easily sign for less, but likely above Byram (kind of like how McDavid and Eichel signed for less than KK last summer). Other than a few centers how many players are more important than those two?

I know McDavid wants to win and has shown that he will take less to help his team do that. But if he wanted to go full mercenary mode, he would definitely set the new high water mark if he hits the market in two years. Guessing Toronto, LA, or New York are drooling at the possibility.

The Blues having Thomas, Hollywood, McTavish and Broberg all locked up for under 8 long term looks amazing with the contracts other comparable players are going to be signing over the next couple of years. What will Snuggerud and Neighbors next contracts going to cost?

I like Neighbours and think he’s going to step up this season physically, but he won’t be getting a huge contract by any means. If he gets offered one by another club, adios.
