I understand the cap is going up, but I would have thought they had learned something from Seth Jones.

Well so be it.

The Hawks continue to mystify with what they are doing with Byram.

I guess we’ll see?

Different style players, but Broberg at 8 is sensational compared to BoBy.

Is it smart to give him this contract before locking up their lord and savior Bedard?

Insane they are paying Byram 50%+ more than Broberg. The only thing Byram does better is finish and have higher scoring teammates.

Byram also looked like complete (bleep) in that series Montreal. I was thinking I was glad the Blues didn’t trade for him last offseason

Agree 100%. Byram is obviously the better offensive player, but Broberg is more well-rounded and for $4.0 million less a year, I'd take him all day long.

In a way it makes sense because they have to justify giving up the 4th overall. If you only pay him 8-10 million you are essentially saying he isn't the top pairing defenseman you are saying he is and the package you gave away for him was that of a top pairing dman.

Now you have to pay him like one, and for now, he is the top paid dman in the league.

To my point, if they were smart (which they arent, look at that trade lol) they wouldve locked up Bedard at X price and then told Byram get lost we arent giving you 13mm a year, bedard only got X

I really thought the Hawks were on the way to building a great core. It was all set up for them. They then could’ve picked whichever d-man they wanted with the 4th overall pick.

And then get did this…

I just don’t see it with Byram. He’s a good offensive d-man but he’s essentially a 4th forward out there. I just don’t think you can have a guy that isn’t very good defensively as your #1.

I now can see why Robertson wants 14 million a season!

Why would you pay that type of money for a defenseman who's not first out the gate for powerplay or penalty kill for any of the teams they've played on? You're banking heavily on him improving. Maybe he'll do it, but it's a hell of a risk to trade a top 5 pick AND that cap space.

I see why Buffalo traded him.

Look at the players that he was behind in Colorado and Buffalo - franchise cornerstones

If he's healthy he'll put up career highs.
