As others have stated, I’m just a bit confused when they didn’t trade that 16 pick and go back into the 20’s knowing he was likely going to be there a few picks later. They must have really like this kids if they didn’t want to even risk it.

It’s hard to argue that they couldn’t have traded that pick considering what the Kings did right after the Blues passed on the consensus picks that were there.

Blues scouts certainly do seem to be gravitating toward the Q league forwards recently. Montreal kid who can bang but he he is making a mistake staying with the Remparts and not taking advantage of an ncaa opp.

He had a concussion towards the first part of this past season and perhaps they are slow playing things somewhat, like Jiricek did his first year back after his injury. Just a thought as he'll certainly have to bang more in the NCAA.

I guess my only issue with a lot of what the reports say, is other than the position, it reads really close to Carbonneau.

I'm not sure why we would select 2 similar players in back to back drafts. Not making a lot of sense, but I guess we'll see.

Similar in some ways, they play opposite wings and players will need to keep their heads up with them in the ice. Blues are going to be a hard team to play against in 3-4 years

I’m honestly pretty giddy about this pick. Gotta love reading things like “wrecking ball” and “terrifying” and “high motor” and “relentless compete”

The kid is 18 and already 6’4 and 200 LB. He adds another 15 pounds of muscle going forward and he’s easily going to be a fan favorite. Just from hits, effort, and physicality alone. But it also sounds like he’s got a good shot and can make some plays. There’s talent there too.

I’ll take a second line winger that can hit 25-30 goals that does the dirty work and hurts a lot of people any day. His floor may be 3rd line center which isn’t a bad thing but I think something severely disappointing and unexpected would need to happen for that to transpire.

Ahh, yeah, I trust they got the guy as they have an eye for talent. He may not be Tage, lets be real, but it was oddly similar to the same positives and negatives with size speed and shot that reminded me of it. Looks like I wasn't the only one, as I have now seen it elsewhere.

I REALLY wanted the Blues to draft Belchetz, but I'm warming up to the Dagenais pick.

I just watched a 30 minute highlight reel, mostly in French which I haven't spoken in 45 years, but this kid has no problem going to the dirty areas, has deadly one timer, and very accurate passing. I think he will be an amazing NHLer in time.

Because they didn’t know he’d still be there in the 20s. Maybe he would’ve been but no way of knowing for sure. I mocked him at 19 as it was clear there was a lot of buzz on him going in that general range. And also, there may not have been another team wanting to move up to 16 that had a pick in the range they felt they were likely to still get their guy. And if he was pretty much the last guy that had in a tier, it’s just not worth risking not getting your guy.

As for if he was the “right” pick at 16? Time will tell. I’m certainly willing to give the Blues scouts the benefit of the doubt given their track record.

I’ll say though. He scored 38 of his 62 points in the final 32 games of this season. That’s not an amazing pace, but it does show he upped his game as the season went along. He has all the tools you’d want in a middle-6 power forward. I have zero regrets passing over Belchetz.
