Some of you treat 3rd round draft picks as if they’re mountains of gold. This is a good move. 3rd round draft picks have little value, Carlo has 1 year left on his contract and doesn’t block Jiricek, and Boston is even paying 15% of his salary via retention.

For the zillionth time here, bringing up outliers does not prove your point. Go back year by year looking at the 3rd round of NHL drafts. The odds for hitting on a 3rd round draft pick are bleak. It’s about 2 players per draft, which is a 6.25% success rate, or once every 16 years per NHL team.

Yes, Carlo is significantly better than Holl.
Carlo can handle 2nd pair duties, he's just better suited to the third pairing.

Well we just drafted the new Parayko with the third 3rd that we still had, so maybe we can all just laugh it off

Worst case if the Blues are out of the race at the deadline a vet defender that isn’t washed has legit value.
Exactly and a 3rd is the minimum for a RHD even a bottom pairing especially with the fact he won't be owed much and his contract will be almost done with.
Unless he completely ishes the bed, there is no downside to this move.
Good trade. It takes pressure off Jiricek to make the team out of camp and gives us insurance if Mailloux struggles. If Jiricek impresses and Mailloux holds on to his spot on the top pair maybe it makes Parayko expendable later on this season.
