The Blues were desperate for a 2C. Since few players want to play in St. Louis, the options were likely McT for 15 & 29 or overpaying Petterson for only 29. I'm fine with the trade. People vastly overvalue draft picks outside the top 10. A lot of those draft picks completely bust or become NHL JAGs. McMichael, Suter, and Buch are not quality full-time NHL C's. The Blues had to make a trade for a 2C.

Call me dumb but I'm watching McTavish highlights over the last few seasons and all I see is a young. David Backes. Obviously his defense is nowhere near as good yet, but he has all the skill to be the same player.

It's probably a stupid comparison but that's who I see.

He’s put up 50 points and he’s only 23. Still room to grow/improve. A better question, why write him off already?

52 points is what got him that contract. The coach that got him there is now an assitant with the Blues. People keep hammering that if Q couldn't work with him, he was dog [shirt]. Craig Conroy was a 40 point (once) Center under Q in STL but was an 80 point Center in Calgary. Not that this team has an Iginla but I'm not suggesting McTavish needs to be an 80 point Center. A 60 Point 2c would be nice, especially with Carbs coming along in the next couple seasons. 7 Million ain't what it used to be.

holloway was a 3rd/4th liner on a stacked edmonton team. then, when given a chance to play 2nd line minutes with blues, he's been a lot better player, and improving, not regressing. He's moved to top line. Mctavish got shuttled to 3rd line.

holloway was getting 8 minutes a game first season, 12 mins, 2nd season.

mctavish has become the 10-12 mins per game players with a hefty contract price.

Guys drafted 3rd oa dont become available vary often. All the skill is still there, it's a matter of commitment to coaching and conditioning. He could be a huge steal for the Blues if he rebounds.
