I think he's defintiely in play as a trade chip leading up to the draft.

It'll be interesting to see if the Blues see Zherenko or Georgi Romanov (if he stays red hot) as in-house second goalie options next year.

I don't think he's traded in the offseason unless he request it. I think they laid it out to him, whoever is playing better will get more starts. Depending on what happens during the season he may get traded. Don't expect to get much back, there just isn't huge returns for goalies.

We now have him on a one-year contract. He's an experienced proven big-game goalie. We now have a good tandem. IF the Blues appear to not be realistically in the run for the Cup next Spring, then trade him to a desperate contender at the Deadline and get as much as you can....And then re-sign him as a UFA in the Summer for a lesser salary as discussed before. Let him know ahead of time what the intention is. He is not dumb, he knows he needs to share the time with a likely lesser amount of play. He also knows that could extend his career, so more time at lesser $ = less time at more $.
And don't forget there is always a possibility of injury to Hofer. Whom do you turn to then if you trade him now??
It's not like the Blues are intentionally trying to lose for a rebuild, with no hope for Binnington to ever be part of winning again. Binnington is valuable for many intangible reasons as well. Being here for a few more years is a good fit for him and for the Blues.

If in season, one would think his play is mediocre at best, and the return will be a bag of pucks. If he is playing well to lights out then he will likely not be traded, especially if Hofer is having an off season. If both are playing well then it is playoff hockey time and no trades.

Pretty much agree with a caveat.

If JB is told he's #2 and wants out, all bets are off I think the Blues reluctantly oblige.

However I would think the Blues would say it's open competition on a continuing basis with these two.

But to put a 2nd or 3rd on his value, which may well be right I don't know, is to say to keep him right where he is imo.

Very well stated, and I think you hit the nail on the head.

The other consideration — off rink:
Does JB and his wife like living in STL? They now have a baby and suburban STL is a pretty nice place to grow a family. What’s their psyche away from hockey? I don’t get the vibe that JB likes the nightlife that much. However, his wife was (is?) an actress who was on a TV show in Canada. If she wants to further that career, a trade to Toronto makes sense. If she is “retired” as an actress, then they’re flexible on location.

But back to on-rink considerations, I think you got it. You keep JB for a strong tandem and insurance against injury to or sophomore slump from Hofer.

Unless he absolutely demands a trade (which I don’t think he’ll do), I think I’d rather just keep him. Hofer is going to need a decent backup with 2026-27 projected to be his first season entering the season as the projected #1.

$6M is a lot for a backup but the Blues have the cap space to do it so that’s not really an issue.

Teams tend to need 2 good goalies these days so I’d rather just keep Binner for now.

I’ll also note that both Romanov and Zherenko will be Group 6 UFAs this summer so the Blues’ goaltending depth could get really shallow really fast. That’ll play a part in what they’d want to do with Binner as well.

I’d be a lot more comfortable moving Binner if we hadn’t lost Ellis…but unfortunately, we did. :/

Agreed. The Blues can always move him later if they really want to. And if his trade value really is only a 2nd or 3rd rd pick (and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with that after the poor season he just had), then why trade him? It’d cost at least that much to then replace him.

The RFA this year are trash. If you want to wait until next years crop...Binner is already gone with an expiring contract by then.
