Yeah, Pages allowed a WP that could have been stopped if he could have moved his body in front of it but couldn't. And he just muffed a wide pitch for a PB that led to an extra run. He's a kneeling statue back there.

His caught stealing % is 0. I wonder what would happen if an old school manager decided to have players steal while he was catching. Today's analytics say stolen bases are not valuable.

No, he has virtually no future here catching w/Bernal & R.R. (although he's a position change candidate) on the runway.Wattage wrote: ↑09 May 2026 18:29 pmi forgot where i saw it but there was a statistical analysis that players that dh and play the field twnd to hit a little better on days they play the field rather than dhing. now part of that is that sometimes guys are just dhing cuz they are injured, but it seems playing the field may keep players more engaged.rockondlouie wrote: ↑09 May 2026 09:36 am^^^THIS^^^ramfandan wrote: ↑09 May 2026 06:48 am
Oli is working this to perfection so far. Hererra is the SECONDARY catcher with Pages his PRIMARY . Oli himself said he wanted to use Ivan H.a couple times per week to 10 days to spell Pages behind the plate. Unless a catcher is Johnny Bench, Molina, Seattle's Raleigh many catchers get 120 games or so with a secondary guy getting 40 approximately. We know that Herrera is used for McGreevy for Michael M. likes Herrera calling the game for him . Yes, the throwing to 2nd is an issue but if McGreevy keeps pitching well with Ivan behind the plate, the number of throws is minimal and less important than calling a great game for McGreevy. So you weigh the two factors.
Gorman goes to DH when Ivan goes behind the dish. Hoping that his replacemnt eventually could be more productive as a spot player in those games.
PS The catcher situation down the road may change if Crooks is deemed ready for St. Louis roster. Rodriguez for 2027 may make an impact regarding Pages spot.
And as we saw just last night he HITS better when he's catching vs DHing:
Herrera when catching:
61 PA
.370 .525 .565 1.090
Herrera when DHing:
113 PA
.209 .354 .352 .706
The only explanation I can come up w/is he's more focused when catching and not so much when sitting on the bench.
long term though, i dont exlect herrera to stick at catcher. i knkw he wants to catch as its basically been his position hes always played since he was in high school, but besides his issues throwing runners out, hes had some leg and knee injurjes and his bat is too valuable. he played some 1b and outfield this spring but i guess that was just to get him ready for emergency use, but i really think he should transition to one of those longterm.
I expect Pages & eventually Crooks will be dealt once Bernal is deemed ready.
Unless Herrera miraculously developed an arm that could nab runners at a 20+% rate, his future is at DH or possible 1st base (I don't see the OF as an option) if Burly is dealt.

i know it was only 31 innings last year but i dont remember seeing anything terrible from ivan in the outfield last year. he actually isnt skow like most catchers. he isnt speedster but he has average to slightly above average speed so hebusnt automatically a statue. although as waljer shiwed runnibg is only half the part as you have to judge flyballs, but fir having never done it he looked way more comfortable than walker initially did starting out.
while sample size is tiny and defensive stats need more data, he was at 0 for bith defensive runs saved and outs above average so he didnt do anything catastrophically bad to put him at negative and while untested mostly, made the routine plays.
id like to see more of him at outfield.

I first suggested Herrera be moved to the OF during his rookie season, got laughed at by a few guys in here.Wattage wrote: ↑10 May 2026 11:05 amim nit sure outfield is off the table.rockondlouie wrote: ↑10 May 2026 09:04 amNo, he has virtually no future here catching w/Bernal & R.R. But he didn't seem all that comfortable in the OF, likely why he only had those 31 innings.
I'd be all for him learning to play LF, hopefully they broach the idea again next spring.
