Tomas Galvas

Post by Pierre McGuire »

A player we haven’t talked about much and probably not since the WJC’s is Czech dman Tomas Galvas…he played a lot with Jiricek in the WJC’s. Smaller dman…very Lane Hutson like in terms of style. He’s been passed over twice in the draft but is now expected to go in the 3rd or 4th round, possibly even the 2nd round based on his performance at the WJC’s.
I thought he was one of the best players in the tourney. Just bringing it up for discussion if anybody has any thoughts on him.

He was super impressive during the World Juniors. I remember being shocked that he was undrafted etc. As a matter of fact Tim, I if I remember correctly, I made a comment along those lines and you chimed in with your (very positive) thoughts on him

I think we all have a little PTSD from getting our hopes up on Perunovich...

He's extremely talented; but he's also extremely tiny.
It's a very hard sell for me to take him but it would depend on who else is there in the 3rd/4th round. I'd be more interested if he were a right hand shot.

Personally, I'd rather look at Tommy Bleyl(if he falls), Vlad Dravecky or Myles Brosnan if we're going for an undersized offensive D; but admittedly, I might be focusing too much on handedness.

Which is why Galvas has gone undrafted the last 2 years. He didn’t just start being good this past season. He’s been good for a while.

But to say you should never ever draft undersized D is silly. I wouldn’t take Galvas early but around the 4th-5th round would be fine. Or later but I expect him to not get fully passed up this time. But if someone else gets him then fine. I personally don’t think he quite has the game to be able to overcome the size disadvantage but the odds of finding any sort of NHLer at that stage of the draft is incredibly low. So if the choice is between someone like Galvas or someone that looks like they’d be waiver fodder in the absolute best case scenario, then I would tend to go for the kid with higher upside even if he has a little less chance of reaching it.

Well, there is that lol.

Big D cover a lot of real estate with their wingspan and longer sticks.

Truly, I am amazed about how much so many of you know about prospects and young players. And when I hear a new name (to me), like Tomas Galvas, gets me to look them up.

Greatly appreciate the insights!

He was ridiculous in the WJC’s….real good player. I wouldn’t be upset if we spent a 4th round pick on him
