Sharks at Blues, March 26
The entire three-game season series between these two teams took place in March. The Blues went 2-1-0 while the Sharks went 1-0-2, meaning this is one of those fun times where two teams each had a winning record against each other. Cool standings system, NHL, it makes a ton of sense.

We’re going to focus on the middle game, a low-scoring contest that didn’t get much attention at the time. It took until 37 minutes in to get the first goal, with Dalibor Dvorsky putting the Blues ahead. Alexander Wennberg tied it early in the third. And that was about it for regulation, as two teams on the edge of the wild-card race played it safe and waited for overtime.

We did get some action in the extra frame. Specifically, this Sam Dickinson semi-breakaway that required Joel Hofer’s save of the night.

Keep that clip running, and you can see how it ended. With the seconds ticking down and a shootout feeling inevitable, Philip Broberg set up fellow offer-sheet signee Dylan Holloway on a bad-angle break. Holloway somehow converted, giving the Blues the win with just three seconds left.

You can probably guess where this goes next. Flip the result of this game to a San Jose OT or shootout win, and the Sharks finish the year with 87 points, while the Blues drop to 85. That swaps the two teams in the standings, meaning the Blues would have just won a top-two pick for the first time in 20 years. Instead, they lost by winning.

Fitting that the main culprits are Broberg and Holloway, the 2 that allegedly "jumpstarted the rebuild". What the offer sheets did was cover up the fact that Army had brought in exceptionally little talent via the Draft. What they did in reality was "anchor a forever rebuild". While the Blues were in full rebuild mode, other teams acquired Celebrini, Schaeffer, Carlsson, etc. etc. etc., and we got NOTHING except 3rd-liners. We didn't even get a SNIFF at the greatness.

Assuming the rest of the year plays out the same for both teams after that game. Butterfly flaps its wings...

That's not even remotely true. The teams got the number combination not the draft slot. While SJ may have gotten less combinations, there's no way to know if that one would have been given to the Blues.

Yeah, that’s not how this works. Even assuming the Blues would have had the same number combos assigned to SJ, if the Blues had finished the season in the #9 slot, then there’s an alternate timeline; the lottery needs to be conducted, the button to draw each ball needs to be pushed again, etc - the chances of the #9 team winning the lottery again is the same as it was before - like 4%. You don’t just get to assume that the lottery results would have been the same. The only way this logic makes sense is if the lottery was conducted prior to the end of the season and the results were already determine that the #9 team would jump to #2…in that case, then yes, the Blues lost out. But that’s not how it works.

Why are you acting like this is the multiverse? We know 100% that 9 jumped up to 2. We dont have to overcomplicate it

Lol it’s easy my friend..

If subject thinks subtle or intentional tanking is evil = Cant be honest about ANYTHING that leads credence to losing in the present could be benefiting in the future.

Its just a weird hill to die on IMO. As a fan you can….
1. Appreciate the excitement down the stretch and fight for a playoff spot.
And
2. Can see how the approach after elimination severely hampered not just our draft position, but our odds at pick 2.
Both can exist but i see people saying “wouldnt trade a single point” are just spiteful since there is evidence of those said points screwing us.

It jumped from 9 to 2 when SJ was occupying the 9 slot. This isn’t hard. You can’t just substitute the Blues at the 9 slot and assume everything would have happened the exact same. It’s an alternate timeline; the lottery would have had to have the exact same results. I was rooting hard for the Blues to lose down the stretch, but I wasn’t the least bit concerned about “what ifs” of another team won the lottery because it simply doesn’t matter.

The “simply doesnt matter” comment could be applied to every last hockey related post on this forum. Im not trying to be argumentative or sound salty. But we 100% know that slot 9 got the 2nd pick and that spot could have been ours if our approach was different. Its over and does not matter. But for sake of the forum and topic in the offseason i comment when i think its relative.

You are being argumentative though, the #9 slot wasn't chosen, the San Jose Sharks were randomly given 50 sets of random numbers, the St. Louis Blues held 30. There is no way to tell when that particular set of number was given to them. IT WAS RANDOM. You are trying to say, that had the Blues packed it in, that winning combination would have been in the Blues hands. That's ABSOLUTELY false. They are randomly distributed, that means not assigned due to the order of points. There is absolutely NO WAY to tell that's what would have happened. You're saying this to dig at people who you disagree with, that's ok. Just be honest about it.

I'm so F***in' confused!! Man I just hope that we get one exciting player out of the first round of the draft, and hopefully 2.
