I'd say he's doing all right. He and McGreevy make a good tandem. And Oli is smart not to break that up.

McGreevy looked so angry the whole game. And Herrera also has been pretty smart about ABS.

Herrera has been better than I thought. So far that platoon has worked nicely. Things are coming up roses on the everyday. We are scoring enough runs when the pitching is good and the defense is pretty air tight. It's been a breath of fresh air watching the young team play. Back to back ace like games by Lib and Mcgreevy hasn't hurt anything. Maybe the bullpen settles in.

He is not a complete catcher or even close.

Oli is working this to perfection so far. Hererra is the SECONDARY catcher with Pages his PRIMARY . Oli himself said he wanted to use Ivan H.a couple times per week to 10 days to spell Pages behind the plate. Unless a catcher is Johnny Bench, Molina, Seattle's Raleigh many catchers get 120 games or so with a secondary guy getting 40 approximately. We know that Herrera is used for McGreevy for Michael M. likes Herrera calling the game for him . Yes, the throwing to 2nd is an issue but if McGreevy keeps pitching well with Ivan behind the plate, the number of throws is minimal and less important than calling a great game for McGreevy. So you weigh the two factors.
Gorman goes to DH when Ivan goes behind the dish. Hoping that his replacemnt eventually could be more productive as a spot player in those games.

PS The catcher situation down the road may change if Crooks is deemed ready for St. Louis roster. Rodriguez for 2027 may make an impact regarding Pages spot.

That right there was the problem. Mcgreevy gound a way to avoid that problem yesterday.

That's not fair.
Herrera threw out a baserunner just 2 years ago.
Sure, he is zero-for-2025-and-2026, but your expectations are too high.

Pages has caught double the innings that Herrera has in 2026.
Obviously, exactly as I perfectly analyzed, the coaches and pitchers, want Pages behind the plate.
By the way, Pages has thrown out an outstanding 30% of attempted base stealers this season - while Herrera is at 0% and last threw one out two years ago.
Herrera is also allowing passed balls/wild pitches at double the rate of Pages.
One thing does make me wonder, however.
It is never about me.
Yet some attempt to make it so (which chagrins me) for some unfathomable reason - and in doing so never fail to confirm the 96%+ accuracy rate of my analysis.
I, of course, am only and always about the game.

My problem long term with Herrera catching isn’t so much that he is poor...but with the fact that it seems like the system has a number of Catchers who are probably better
defensively?
Also...his bat is huge and needs to be in the lineup every day.
Until Crooks, Bernal, Rodriguez etc emerge him catching twice a week is probably no big deal?
I worry about injury. Look at what happened to him last year.

Herrera doesn’t control the run game well, but otherwise he’s a good catcher. Especially in the ABS era, he knows the strike zone very well. Oli has done a nice job choosing when to play him at catcher based on the running game of the opponent.

Well, he is the preferred catcher for the best pitcher on the team.

Exactly! Herrera's a perfectly serviceable catcher against teams that won't run him out of the building. The problem is he's been injury-prone in the past and his bat far outweighs his catching ability.
