OT: Xander Bogaerts: On his way to the Hall of Very Good. (or HOF?)

Post by ecleme22 »

Before tonight:

33 years old
1857 hits
386 Doubles
204 HR
.797 career OPS
42.7 WAR

BUT, he has 7 MORE YEARS UNDER CONTRACT.

Do I think he plays all those years? No. But that's a lot of compiling.

He could be by all is said and done:

2500 hits
500 Doubles
300 HR
53 WAR

That's on the cusp of HOF, IMO...

Hall of vey good? Almost certainly. Hall of fame? Borderline if he ages very gracefully (3000+ hits, 60 WAR).

Think he would have to get to at least 2700/2800 hits just cause you have to be elite offensively if not very good defensively and he is not. I think he is very good, but just very good at many things and maybe not elite enough at hits or power enough to be considered.

He may get the counting stats - but how many players get to the HOF without a GG or a top 3 MVP finish.

Arenado has twice the all star appearances (8) and a lot more career MVP votes, not to mention all the Plat gloves.

60 WAR is a good cutoff for HOF worthiness, and I'm not sure that anybody (other than Rose) with 3000 hits is not in Cooperstown. Again, he'd have to age incredibly well to reach those numbers, especially the WAR value.

Arenado is 18 months older and has one more full season than Xander, and is at 52 fWAR (58.7 bWAR) compared to 45 fWAR for Xander. Nolan has a much better chance of being enshrined, and if he somehow reverses course and ages gracefully he'll likely be a slam dunk inductee.

He might not have those, but he does have 5 silver sluggers. The only shortstops with more are Larkin, Ripken, and A-Rod.

Compare him to Renteria though whose career ended at 34. Renteria had 400-500 more hits than Bogaerts at the same age, 64 less HRs, and 169 more steals. Renteria did play in a different era though, so Bogaert’s OPS+ (116) dwarfs Renteria’s (94). Renteria had 3 SS’s and 2 GG’s to Bogaert’s 5 SS’s and 0 GG’s.

Won’t come anywhere close to making the Hall.
