Send Buchnevich along with Kyrou. That’s 16 million going out and Matthews 13 million coming back. It could be done.
I'm just having a hard time you guys not comprehending that the Blues don't have a cap issue coming up. They quite literally could sign Auston Matthews without moving out a single player. Is it prudent for them to do so? Not really. They definitely need to shed a contract like Drouins. But if absolutely nothing changed today, you are looking at the Blues making 2 bigger contract moves in the offseason to shore up the team. one in RHD and 1 in forward while promoting 1 forward. But if they decided that one of those acquisitions were to be Matthews, they could do it and sign a 2m RHD, promote Stenberg (which they are going to do) and call it a day.
To boldface: He's under contract for two more seasons.

To the premise of this post. Sorry if I come off as crabby.

The title: Auston Matthews wants out in Toronto
Says Matthews?

Auston Matthews isn't sure if he'll be back with Toronto next season, per @reporterchris

To use this "source" is questionable at best. What is "reporterchris"? How does the same know Matthews "isn't sure"? What does that even mean? He has two years of term left.

Matthews reportedly wants to see real change to the roster through trades & free agency before committing to another season.

Repeat my first rant and note the word "reportedly." Even if true, as there is no reason to believe any of this, who is Matthews to "want" management to accede to his presumed demands?

To repeat about him "committing to another season", he has two years of term left.
Maybe Matthews gets traded this summer, maybe not. But @reportchris is Chris Johnston. He works for tsn and he’s a pretty famous hockey insider. It’s not like he’s just some guy.

The Blues could make it work, and could probably offer an enticing package, but I just don't see how 2 years of Matthews right now is a smart move. I also don't see why Matthews would want to do it. This just isn't a team on the cusp of contention.

If we were on a different timeline and all of our young impact players were a couple years more mature and coming off a couple playoff years, then sure, go for it.

Yup. And not just Matthews - applies to almost any of the shiny toys out there.

We may not be on the cusp but we also aren't a bottom dweller. It may be a situation where (if he truly wants out) the trade doesn't happen until training camp so he can look at what every team did in the off season.

Now if you are Toronto getting the #1 overall changes a lot of your off season as McKenna won't exactly replace Marner, but he will help scoring without a doubt.

Many teams may want to see how Mathews comes back from his knee injury first before offering a package.

I would imagine though, just like with Brady and with Quinn, that a team isn't offering a significant package for him without at least some assurance he will seriously consider extending.

Listening to NHL Network on Friday as long a shot as it seemed initially Friedmann reported that Hughes extending in Minny isn't that far-fetched anymore and that he is enjoying his time there and the team has a lot of promise.

Players come here, love it here, and quite frankly after the media circus in Toronto Mathews may very well prefer a lower key media town where he can just be himself.

It's genius.

Buch and Kyrou for Knies and Matthews
Two NTCs and a NMC in the same trade?
It will be the talk of town!
Truly, that would be the best trade in Blues history!

It would be way up there for sure but hard to top the trades for Hull, Oates, MacInnis and Pronger.

Considering at least three of those guys are still part of the city and organization, I would have to agree.

But the "getting it done" part of it with the NTC/NMCs, not to mention the value difference, would really be something. I actually have a real hard time seeing Buch and Kyrou going together to the same team.

In retrospect, Demitra in the mix?

But, at the time:
Hull for Ramage and Wamsley appeared to be another Flames rip-off (Mullen and Gilmour). At the time, and NHL coach and/or GM (Sather?) somewhat jokingly mentioned a conspiracy when it happened.

Oates for Federko: Perhaps you're too young to appreciate how important Federko was to face of the Blues, in line with Players and Unger. And that Oates shortly thereafter shat on the Blues.

MacInnis: At the time, legit trade. Blues sent Housely (also in HOF) and two seconds

Pronger: At the time, "Who is Chris Pronger?" and "For Shanahan and who else?"

At this moment, Buchnevich and Kyrou for Matthews and Knies would be in a different stratosphere.

We would have to offer something like Thomas, Kyrou, and a #1 pick as a starting point. You could sub Parayko for one of those assuming he wants to go there.

My proposal was: Kyrou, Lindstein and 2 1sts (Ours and the Avalanche 1st)..

That should be more than enough to get it done. Of course both Kyrou and Matthews have to agree.

Then we use the 15th pick to take a defenseman.

Thomas is out of the question. It only makes sense to trade for Matthews if we are keeping him. The objective is to have Thomas and Matthews center the top 2 lines. No other team could match that combo.

He never said he wants out. But let's say he does actually want out. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE DRAW FOR HIM? If he wants to win a cup better to stay in Toronto. We have no chance at a cup in short term. Its people only think of one side of the deal. Mcdavid wants out too.. 0% chance he wants to go to stl. These generational players want to win.

I don't follow Toronto. Was Matthews still Matthews without Marner? I wonder how much of that magic was him alone? He might be able to turn Buch or Kyrou into a real threat. Those guys are scoring 20 without a Center. He could be the Center Kyrou never had. It would give Dvo an additional 2 years to mature on the 3rd line. You don't get chances to sign guys like Mathews often. If Matthews is on the Blues do you think the Blues are a PO team? I think so.....

I would pass on Matthews. Makes to much and seems to be injury prone.
