NHL.com Adam Kimelman and Mike Morreale have the Blues picking Lawrence or Suvanto at #11 and both have Villeneuve at #15. I think my cat is bigger than Villeneuve, so Lawrence and Villeneuve would be high risk, high reward type picks.

Just watched Villeneuve leave the puck in the corner to avoid being hit in game 7 of the semi finals. 90 seconds later goal 4 was in their net. Goal one he gave the puck away in his zone and then got beat in front of the net for a tip in. No idea how he projects but personally I don’t care what his offensive upside is if he’s weak in his own zone.

I’m with you. I think the Blues tried the small, offensive Dmen with Krug and Perunovich, but now it’s back to the bigger guys outside of Lindstein, who isn’t small, but likely is their smallest D on opening night. And from what I’ve read about Villaneuve he just doesn’t sound like an Army pick.

I’ve soured quite a bit on Villeneuve since early in the season. Tommy Bleyl is a similar style of d-man that really came on this season and was super impressive as Moncton beat Carbonneau’s Armada. Very good skater, smart and always has his head up. Excellent passer and distributor. 81 pts in 63 games as a d-man and now taking it up another notch in the playoffs. He’s ranked as a 2nd rounder by most but I bet he ends up getting taken in the later 1st now.

Bleyl looked better as the series went on but they are both so small. I'm wondering if there is two or three Gabe Smith type players the Blues could get in the 3rd round? Utah is looking good down the middle with Desnoyer, Beaudoin and Smith to develop.

What’s your read on the other highly rated small d, Ryan Lin?

Very talented, makes good reads but quite inconsistent defensively. Makes a lot of plays that work well in Jrs but won’t in the pros. Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing (so does Jiricek for example) but how his skills will translate to the pro game is a valid concern to go along with the small size. He’s also an average skater. To overcome the size disadvantage, a player usually needs to be a plus skater. Lin isn’t IMO. Some have him in the 10-20 range but I have him more in the 20-35 range.

I prefer Bleyl. Much better skater and he’s 6’0”. Not that 6’0” is much bigger than Lin’s 5’11” but it helps. Late bloomer. Will return to Moncton next season before heading to college.

what happened to Ryan Roobroeck. He was rated a pretty high center pre Christmas polls?

(Responding mostly because there was a question about high end talent being available in the 3rd round)

He played most of the year with absolutely zero s****s to give about hockey.
His effort level made Kyrou look like a Plager in comparisson.

And he's not exclusively a center. He spends a LOT of time on the wing because of his terrible defensive effort.


Extremely disappointing given that his physical tools/skills would put him in the mix to go top 5. But his effort level was that bad.

Keep an eye on the Russian's(Gashilov and Arkhipov in particular)
They are getting completely overlooked this year.

Also....Kuch isn't a Defenseman. I like my Defensemen large and mobile. If I'm gonna have a small speedy skill guy I'd prefer he was a forward.
