Stupid roster management...
40 man rosters get tight, and often cost you players in the waiver process. But keeping 60-day IL players (who are out for the entire year) that are on your 40 man roster...but only on the minor league IL and not putting them on the MLB 60 day IL... just to save some service time is "dumb". Your protecting something 5 or 6 years in the future, that may or may not even be relevant, and wasting 40-man MLB roster spots with dead arms....TODAY. The Cardinals are effectively operating on a 38 man roster for the rest of the year if they continue this idiocrasy, and losing players through waivers because of it. Fits and Cooper need to be removed (60-day MLB IL), and free those 40-man roster spots up. What are they going to do when Lars comes back..??? Dump another player through waivers just to protect some service time that is "wishful thinking"...???

They just lost Luis Peralta a week after they claimed him... Why claim him if you are going to dump him a week later by exposing him to waivers. He was a certain pick-up by another team.
And you did it to bring on a player you already ran through waivers earlier in the year...but sent back to the minors.
Seems haphazard and "short-sighted", given the reality of the idiotic 40 man injured rules regarding minors versus majors.

Teams do that all the time. The Tigers just DFA’d Zack Short like four days after trading for him.rizzardo wrote: ↑05 May 2026 15:42 pmThey just lost Luis Peralta a week after they claimed him... Re: Stupid roster management...
the team had a need, and he wasn't ready. Shuster wasn't on the 40 man. Easy move, imo. And as FGM2 said, "teams do it all the time"

A lot of teams do it people are just used to the way mo operated and not how a lot of other teams do things. Mo never did it so they think that’s how things should be doneFuturegm2 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 15:47 pmTeams do that all the time. Re: Stupid roster management...
This has nothing to do with "the use of the DFA".. but rather what the actual cost was in regards to having two dead spots and not utilizing the MLB 60 day IL. Many people do not understand the difference between the minor and major league 60-day IL. Right now, the Cardinals refuse to use the MLB 60-day DL for Fitts or Cooper just to save service time...when they are still taking up 40-man roster spots. That really makes no sense given the fact they are betting on a very uncertain outcome in the future just to save service time that may not even be relevant. What is relevant....today... is the fact you "effectively lost two roster spots" for an entire year off your 40 man roster.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 15:47 pmTeams do that all the time. You just said they are losing players through waivers because of it. So obviously it does have to do with the use of the DFA. Which teams use in the very way the Cardinals just did with Peralta all the time.rizzardo wrote: ↑05 May 2026 16:08 pmThis has nothing to do with "the use of the DFA".. but rather what the actual cost was in regards to having two dead spots and not utilizing the MLB 60 day IL. Also pretty sure that transferring Cooper and Fitts to the MLB 60 day would burn an option on them at some point.
Teams have a lot to weigh when they make these moves. I’ll trust their judgement.

This is a lot of hoopla about nothing. I can wake up in the morning and find other things to criticize besides this.

Re: Stupid roster management...
it doesnt burn an option. you burn an option year by being sent to the minors for more than 20 strsight days in a year. being cakled up then sent back down or added to il then reassigned back down doesnt burn any extra option years. it doesnt work that way. fitts option year for this season was already burned when we sent him down andnkept him down for 20 days.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 16:33 pmYou just said they are losing players through waivers because of it.
