Re: Andrew Chafin Opted Out
He’s throwing in the mid 80’s. Probably why the Twins and now the Reds didn’t call him up.

I don’t know what he threw last year. This year he’s throwing in the mid 80s.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 07:29 amHe had a 2.41 ERA last season throwing that hardCardinals1964 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 02:26 am He’s throwing in the mid 80’s. Probably why the Twins and now the Reds didn’t call him up.

rbirules wrote: ↑04 May 2026 18:53 pmFive came in his first two appearances, including four in his second appearance of the year. One walk in the last 4 weeks or so.rockondlouie wrote: ↑04 May 2026 13:31 pm I'd rather have him that Bruihl
But
6 WALKS in 9 1/3 IP at Louisville
Like I said, I'd take him over Bruihl

Re: Andrew Chafin Opted Out
I read on Viva El Birdos that he started the year throwing in the mid 80s but was up to 88 or so in his last few games. I don't know where to get MiLB game data like that to confirm.Cardinals1964 wrote: ↑05 May 2026 08:01 amI don’t know what he threw last year. Last year his FB velocity was 89.6 mph.

Re: Andrew Chafin Opted Out
Chafin also had a 12% walk rate this spring so control has been an issue, 16.2% at Louisville.
At Louisville I read he had an 88 mph average four-seamer and 87.7 mph sinker.
in 2025 he averaged 89.5 mph on his four-seamer and 89.7 mph on his sinker, first time in his MLB career he averaged under 91 MPH on either pitch. --mlbtr
Never was a hard thrower but got outs.
I'd like to see Bloom take a shot at him but given the good record he may be claimed before he gets a shot.

He's a free agent, not a waiver claim.rbirules wrote: ↑05 May 2026 08:37 amI read on Viva El Birdos that he started the year throwing in the mid 80s but was up to 88 or so in his last few games. Agreed, his walk rate has been atrocious for years. That's the biggest issue with out current BP.rockondlouie wrote: ↑04 May 2026 13:31 pm I'd rather have him that Bruihl

To answer everyone else's question, his FB velocity was 89.7mph last year per baseballsavant. That ranked him in the bottom 4%...
He might be better than Bruihl, but is it worth getting an aged bandaid vs working with young talent? Not to me at this stage of the Cardinal's rebuild.
