Saggese wasn't seeing any playing time. Does Prieto even see the field? Where?
Tommy played himself out of PT.
IF they see him having any upside at all he needed to be sent
down, imo.
Prieto soon to be 27 deserved a shot and very well may be the better player.
I agree that Prieto has earned a shot. I just don't see where they slide him in. Is he the backup SS and 2B if Winn or JJ need a day off? Backup 1B if Burly needs a day? 3B already has Gorman and Urias.
if you take away a middle infielding back up...shouldn't you replace him with someone who plays the middle infield? Torres plays 2B, yes...but not SS. And Prieto also plays 3B...which Saggese did as well.
Prieto has started 19 games at SS for Memphis this year. 19 starts at SS, 4 starts at 3B, 3 starts at 2B
Torres has started 17 games at 2B for Memphis this year. 17 starts at 2B, 7 starts at CF

Prieto replaces Saggese who was capable of playing 3B, SS, 2B....Torres could only do 1 of those. Prieto can do all 3.

Isn't Fermin also capable of backing up SS?
I really don't know...he hasn't this year. It was only Saggese, I think, when Winn was hurt/off? And JJ can back up SS in a pinch if needed, too. I think Fermin's bat earned him time in LF as the 4th/5th OF.

Odd.
Not unmerited, but odd.
Where will a LH hitting middle infielder get PA's in STL?
Team does not need another LH bat.
And they already have the gloves of Winn, Wetherholt, Fermin up the middle - as well as Gorman and Urias at 3B.
Not much work for a #6 infielder.
I believe it speaks more to what is available at AAA, and potential breaks coming for starters.

Yes, though I think I'd place Prieto into the "backup" category and Fermin into the "utility" category. As in, Fermin can spell a guy on an off day, but Prieto can fill the role while a guy is on the IL or something

i get that -- i guess i was just thinking it could have been an opportunity for Torres (it still could be if Scott is sent down) -- Fermin is capable of spelling Winn a day here or there but if something worse happened either Saggese or Prieto aren't far away.

Saggese was 1 for 10 vs LHP this year and has a career .626 OPS vs LHP in the MLB. I don’t think we’ll miss him. If anything it’s probably more about the development of a 24 year old player than finding a place for an almost 27 year old infielder who has nothing left to prove in the minors.
