Leahy/Dobbins piggyback.
Good morning.
Just thinking about a strategic adventure. I know we are is a long stretch of games, so six starters is the way they will probably go. But one starter, Dobbins, is good for no more than four innings. Then a pen game, then unavailability the next game.
Or.
Stay five day rotation.
Libby
Mcg
May
Leahy/Dobbins
Pallante.
The four starters give us into the sixth, the piggy back gets us thru seven.
Trying to eliminate two pen games- Leahy and Dobbins.

They sent Dobbins back down and can't recall him before 15 days except in the case of injury.

I knew he was down, didn’t know the rule. Ok. Once available, pull him up. Is that a possibility. Move another olayer off.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑04 May 2026 09:22 am They sent Dobbins back down and can't recall him before 15 days except in the case of injury.

Makes more sense to put the dobbins and Leahy starts far away from each other.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 09:18 am Good morning.

Re: Leahy/Dobbins piggyback.
Why. Seems with there innings capacity they would fit well. Otherwise, in each of their starts, we gotta use four pen guys. Seems we could greatly reduce that load.ecleme22 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 09:37 amMakes more sense to put the dobbins and Leahy starts far away from each other.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 09:18 am Good morning.

If the team has a bunch of games in a row, it makes more sense to use a 6 man rotation to give pitchers added rest.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 09:43 amWhy. If the team has a normal schedule, it makes more sense to, for example, make Dobbins a starter and put Leafy in the bullpen.

I think they may have promised Leahy a starters roll this season

I’m not opposed to that. But Leahy Can probably start and go a good five, and Dobbins can only go three ish. Reduces the pen by at least two relievers. Every five days.Charles King wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:33 pm I think they may have promised Leahy a starters roll this season
I use Leahy as most others Libby mcg and May are going six or close to it.

In that scenario, why not just make dobbins a reliever?sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:38 pmI’m not opposed to that. He is the reliever by role. He’s an ever five day reliever. Under this scenario, every five days, we could get 7-8 innings pitched, with minimal use of the pen.ecleme22 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:44 pmIn that scenario, why not just make dobbins a reliever?sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:38 pmI’m not opposed to that. Then with Libby and McG and May, you use the pen heavier. Pallante is the five guy/ he gives you what you got.
Get it’s just an idea to use Dobbins effectively and maybe cut down on pen stress in a predictable environment.

I think there is next to no chance he is a reliever. They have mentioned on St. Louis cardinals sports central they like bringing up a 6th starter every so often to push every one back a day they think that’s what helped keep the rotation healthy last season with McGreevy so I think that’s what they will continue to do

What you’re doing though is making the pen less deep the other four days.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:49 pmHe is the reliever by role. He’s an ever five day reliever. Also, who’s to say that Dobbins is the best pitcher when Leahy is lifted? Maybe there are two lefties leading off who crush righties like dobbins?

As for the pen, how do you figure? On a normal six man rotation using these six pitchers, we will use 3-5 pitchers per night. 7-9 innings nightly.
The piggy back Hopes to give you eight, with one reliever maybe. This would be an expectation every fifth game.

I'm guessing a six man rotation won't be the norm.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 13:00 pmWell any scenerio could and will happen.ecleme22 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:54 pmWhat you’re doing though is making the pen less deep the other four days.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:49 pmHe is the reliever by role. They will never try this, but it doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. You can continue to develop/stretch both and on days when they are good, the BP gets a day off. A lot of MILB pitchers have pitched in tandem and are used to being the "2nd starter". There have been other times that the Cardinals should have done this, but it is rare that it has lined up so well.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 13:00 pmWell any scenerio could and will happen.ecleme22 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:54 pmWhat you’re doing though is making the pen less deep the other four days.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑04 May 2026 12:49 pmHe is the reliever by role. Good write. Yes MiLB is classic for this scenerio. The line up so well notation would be solved if the piggyback was a planned event every fifth game.10CWilliams wrote: ↑04 May 2026 14:23 pmThey will never try this, but it doesn't mean it isn't a good idea.
