Generations of Cardinals fans: Question

At almost 81 years old, my youngest daughter and husband took my two-month-old grandson to a game today. How young were you when you attended your first game.

I'm so proud to see another generation be a Cardinal fan.

I just turned 65 and am originally from the Des Moines area, so not from St. Louis.

My dad took me and my 2 brothers to St. Louis in 1972, when I was 11. We saw a 3 game series against the last place Phillies, including a Steve Carlton victory on Saturday night on his way to 27 wins that year. Fortunately, the great Al Santorini pitched a complete game victory on Sunday to salvage one game for the Cardinals.

Unfortunately, my hero Lou Brock got only a Texas Leaguer double for his only hit on the weekend, and no stolen bases.

We loved the visit, which included a ride up the Arch, of course, Grant's Farm, and a memorable trip on the SS Admiral.

Footnote: at our Sunday game, Ted Sizemore was thrown out at home trying to get an inside the park home run. The next night, after we had returned home, Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson hooked up in an extra inning pitchers' duel (we couldn't talk Dad into staying for one more night!). In the bottom of the 13th, Ted Sizemore got his inside the park home run to walk off the victory of the Mets. Not sure have to ask my mom...first game I can remember was brummer stealing home...my dad was a cubs fan and I remember him saying he's going....then the crowd erupted...place went nuts....I was 7....took my daughter when she was 2 ..cards came back and beat the cubs 10-9...she was holding a mini bat standing by me as cards took the lead ... all the fans stood up as the place erupted...she got a smile on her face... held the bat up in the air with 1 hand as high as she could...she had no clue what the heck was going on..but it got her pumped up..lol...never forget it

I was 8 years old when my Dad and uncle took me and my cousin to my first Cardinal game. That was 1956 on Grand Ave. Busch Stadium ..

Note": As most know the park was formerly Sportsman Park but changed names in 1953 (when Anheuser-Busch purchased the team ). So that happened when was in Kindergarten age 5.
When I went as an 8 year old I would tell my friends 'I went to a game at Busch Stadium . However, my Dad , Uncle , and Grandpa kept referring to it as Sportsmans Park for making the name change for them after all those years was tough.
My Dad would take us to two games per year and usually one of them for sure was the New York Giants . Asked my Dad the 2nd year going , why he wanted the Giants vs. Cardinals game. He told me , 'Because they have Willie Mays , the Say Hey kid . He is great to watch !

My first year seeing Willie Mays in 1956 he was 25 years old ( his rookie year was 1951) .
When you mention 5- tool player .. That was Willie Mays hit, power, run , field, throw all at elite levels.

I remember sitting down the first base line.
The Polo Grounds was always known for its short dimensions down both lines and its cavernous CF.
Most famous of course for Bobby Thompson’s Shot Heard Round The World and Willie Mays catch in CF.

I started to listen to Browns games on the radio in 1953 when I was 6. Near the end of the season my Dad took me to my first game at Sportsman’s Park, Browns v Tigers, to see Satchel Paige pitch. That, of course, was the Browns last year in StL so next summer it was the Cardinals on the radio and I’ve been a fan ever since. That year Dad took me to see Stan the Man play and he hit a HR. From then, 54 thru 59, we drove from Central Illinois for one game a year on a weekend and Stan hit a HR every game.

My first game was Saturday, August 17,1963 vs the Giants. I had just turned 8 years old. Marichal vs Broglio. Musial did not start but hit a walk off PH single in the 10th inning. My father wanted me to see Stan the Man in person since it was known to be his last season.

I took my son when he was three. I let him eat everything he wanted and left when he got tired, around the third inning. I wanted it to be a great experience and somewhere he wanted to go back. He will soon be 50 and I still have the first few ticket stubs in an album for keep sakes.
