Most nationally got their first glimpse of our JJ/Winn DP combo

Post by ramfandan »

I had a buddy text me from WIsconsin after JJ started that double play running to his left in the grass, fielding it, making a spin move throwing back to Winn on target, and Winn firing his 92 mph fastball to complete the DP.
He said , 'Wow ! That was impressive .
As JJ told reporters , Winn tells me to get him the ball and he will take care of the rest of it ( meaning using his 90+ mph arm to finish off the double plays. Even Winn said in an interview I knew he could hit really well but didn't know much about his defense but he is really good .
The two of us get along very well .
Glad to see those two show the 'leather ' last night . Many fans around the country must have been highly impressed as my buddy in 'brat & beer' land was when he texted me.

Four double plays in the first five innings. Gets a pitcher to the sixth and yes they were nice. Don’t forget the JJ double play on the dive line shot.

McG line looks good, but if not for the double plays, he wouldn’t have made it into the fourth.

Thanks for adding the diving JJ DP ball too. Good pointon McGreevy getting the DP help at the right times. One thing our pitchers are learning is that they have an up the middle DP combo that can make the pitcher look quite effective.

You are correct. And Pallante gets a lot of miss hit ground balls, they just find a hole it seems. When they start finding leather, even better news.

The double play starts with a ground ball. Pitching gets a lot of credit. Not taking away from the JJ play.

They were fabulous last night.

Teoscar was responsible for one of the DPs, as just a little bit of hustle woulda beat out the throw. But still only Winn can get him on that one.

By my count there were 2 DPs (including that one) that in the whole league only this duo (esp. Winn's arm) can complete.

Funny you say that. I too thought two times, no chance. And they weren’t even challenged I don’t believe.

Bulldog, remember when we talked about needed defense and others were more concerned with needed offense. Defense makes your pitching much better and just sometimes you can beat a good team with only scoring 3 runs.

Yes. I believe good defense is critical to pitching success. Mcg last night does not get thru four innings, if that, without those DP’s.

And several of the plays were not routine. Game changer.

Most likely the best keystone combo in MLB for years to come.

I wouldn't be shocked to see both holding Gold Glove awards some day!

Could be, who would you say is better or even equal this season?

Maybe Swanson/Hoerner..........but Swanson is fading, well behind Winn now while Hoerner may be just a notch above JJW?

Hoerner is 2 or 3 notches above JJ at this point. And JJ is having a pretty good defensive showing...so that says a lot about Hoerner. It'll be JJ's time soon enough....more reps needed.

Hoerner (+4 DRS/+7 OAA) is just a notch above JJW (+3 DRS/+5 OAA).

the DRS fluctuates so much on a daily basis.... Overall Defensive Metric rating : 4.4 to 3.3. JJ is having a great start to the career at 2B, but Nico is the Gold Standard, and he's not likely to give that up this year or next. He's more than 1 notch ahead of his peers.

Nico is indeed the "Gold" standard and will likely hang on to that gold glove.

But that was before JJW hit MLB, this former second baseman thinks JJ has a shot to be just a notch behind him at seasons end.
