Why NOT use the NHL draft PICKS to Trade for a 2C?
The Blues want a 2/3C combo battle with Dvorsky. I think we all know based off Dvorsky's international play and his age that he has the potential in the next couple years to be a 2C. Why don't the Blues go find themselves a bonified 2C and trade 2 of the draft picks away for it? Even if it's for 3-4years. What harm is trading the Detroit pick and a 3rd for someone who slots into that skill level. If we really wanted to go all in, why not trade 2 of the 1st or all 3?
I know we don't want to completely exit the 1st round, but it seems like we should be trying to saddle up our wingers with guys that can help them play.

I'm for this angle way over the BT/winger move. And nothing against DD I think he's going to be very good but there remains plenty of room and need for strong centers......and giving up assets should be done for fixing the weaker spots.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 14:48 pm The Blues want a 2/3C combo battle with Dvorsky. Just saw the second thread subject.....I guess my answer goes for both. But a trade should not be discounted.

Sure, but the question remains are there any teams shopping a #2C that fits in with our age range? Outside of maybe Hischier in NJ I don't see anyone available who fits the bill or would cost one of our first rounders. The league is thin on centers at the moment.

I just feel like the only surefire way to get some help up the middle is to use our position of strength. We currently have a plethora of picks and way too many winger prospects. To me this allows you to do 1-2 moves to actually impact the big league roster. And it's not win at all costs mode where you trade for 30 year olds. You could package 3 1sts' and 2-3 prospects and you could end up with a fresh winger and a 2C. I know that's a lot of hypotheticals.dhsux wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 14:58 pmI'm for this angle way over the BT/winger move. and to ratonmono2, the league has a lot of 2/3C's. It's short on 1C. People are making the distinction that 1C is much different then lining up you 2C against someone else 1C or their 2/3C. That's where the gap is at. And Thomas has now proven repeatedly he can line up at 1C vs the other team. It's whether or not we can get him started in the year. ROR for flippin sakes is still lining up at 2C and playing well. We ditched way too early there.

We didn't ditch ROR too early. This team shifted into a rebuild that year. They are still in it. ROR is not Nashville's #2C but their #1C. Stamkos has been on wing for years now. Where are these #2Cs available? We grabbed a #3C in Suter last summer. I've seen a dozen names thrown out there and none are worth investing a first rounder into acquiring aside from Hischier if they're even available.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 15:15 pmI just feel like the only surefire way to get some help up the middle is to use our position of strength. Re: Why NOT use the NHL draft PICKS to Trade for a 2C?
I don't see the need to land an NHL established 2C right now. The window for us being contenders probably isn't opening for another 2-3 seasons if we're lucky with our prospects developing. I do see the need/benefit to land someone in Dvorsky's age range that could be a 2C or maybe even a 1C if we're lucky. Having two young guys pushing for the 2C would be good for the organization and provide depth down the middle.
Using our picks to acquire a young C prospect(Desnoyers, Hage, Hagens, etc) with upside makes sense to me as they will be hitting their prime when this team is hopefully opening the window instead of landing someone like Hischier who will be closer to exiting his prime years.

Im on the “no” side. Its not our time yet. Unless you are getting hischier i just think its rushed.
My options
1- make all 3 picks. The way the boues have drafted in the mid to later part of the 1st, we could draft our guys, see how they look after a year and then choose who to move.
2- make 2 picks and use the later 1st and other assets to move up. Having a smorgasbord of prospects is never a bad idea.
I could be wrong but next offseason seems like the time to put our chips in. We will have more team questions answered too

If I am reading this right the point here, amongst just a few posters, is to focus on C.
How we get there, who we move....remains open for debate but to expend a ton of capital....it should be for a center.
Can't wait for summer to see what the Blues ACTUALLY DO.
My money says it's on center position.

We need a play making center that scores 70 pts a season. Those guys don’t grow on trees.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 15:15 pmI just feel like the only surefire way to get some help up the middle is to use our position of strength. If it’s a 50 pt center….hard pass for me.

I it is a pipe dream to think that even if a team were willing to deal a desnoyers/hagens/hage that they would be willing our firsts and/or excess winger prospects. Any incentive to deal means that that team needs a quality return (read Thomas) that gets them over the line now.

Kevin Hayes was acquired for Draft Picks, and then we had to give away even more draft picks to dump his salary less than 2 years later.
Let's do that again. That was so fun.

Yes, 100%. At least for those players. I’m crossing my fingers that we can at least include Kyrou in a deal for a center (or a top 14 draft pick) but you’re going to have to set your sights a little lower than that.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 20:01 pm I it is a pipe dream to think that even if a team were willing to deal a desnoyers/hagens/hage that they would be willing our firsts and/or excess winger prospects. Re: Why NOT use the NHL draft PICKS to Trade for a 2C?
With the rapidly increasing salary cap, teams are not trading young #1 or #2 centers, since they can easily sign them long term (overpaying if necessary) without causing salary cap problems. The only way I see for the Blues to acquire a #2 center is to trade Thomas (stupid) or hope a #2 quality center prospect falls in the upcoming draft past about pick #5, so the Blues could package some of their 3 1st round draft picks and/or prospects to move up in the draft to select a center Blues scouts think will be a #2 center at worst.
Picks #10 and #15 are worth about pick #3, but I can’t see a team being willing to trade a top-3 draft pick.
Picks #10 and #31 are worth about pick #5.
Picks #15 and #31 are worth about pick #7.
If a center Blues scouts think will be a #2 center drops past pick #4 or #5, the Blues should be willing to trade either the 10th or 15th pick along with Colorado’s pick to move up in the draft to get that center. If non-blue chip prospects have to be included in the deal along with the 2 1st round draft picks, so be it.
The other option if the Blues don’t get very lucky in the draft lottery would be for the Blues to gamble that a #2 center prospect falls to pick 10, but that would have a high risk of backfiring.

Re: Why NOT use the NHL draft PICKS to Trade for a 2C?
To add to my previous comment, the Kraken are a team that since they have so many young center prospects, I could see them being willing to trade down to the Blues 10th pick if the Kraken end up after the draft lottery with a high 1st round pick where 1 of the top couple center prospects is still available. The Kraken could also be interested in trading for Kyrou, but Kyrou’s no trade clause makes any Kyrou trade speculation nearly worthless.

I would not say absolutely not to do that but there are pitfalls.
I'd say the biggest difference of opinions is more about the return. I think what you think we would get in return is probably better than what I think we would get in return.

Is that center in this draft? We do have to look at the actual list of draft eligibles.zoiks wrote: ↑28 Apr 2026 23:09 pm With the rapidly increasing salary cap, teams are not trading young #1 or #2 centers, since they can easily sign them long term (overpaying if necessary) without causing salary cap problems. Also, I’m sorry, but those draft pick value equations are completely arbitrary. If they were accurate, you’d see those types of trades all the time.
The center you’re looking for is Malhotra. And if he does drop, the price for teams to move up to get him would be prettt high is my guess
