StL's big move in MLB power rankings

Post by imetsatchelpaige »

One can argue there was nowhere to go except up, but 14-10 has surprised a lot more people than just us.

17. St. Louis Cardinals
Record: 14-10
Preseason ranking: 26

The Cardinals have defied expectations in the standings over the first four weeks, but is it sustainable? They rank in the bottom five in ERA, and that even includes a goose egg from closer Riley O'Brien. He's one reason the Cardinals are above .500, as he has blown just one save in seven chances. And while the team ERA isn't anything to write home about, the Cardinals have been very good in high-leverage moments, ranking in the top five in clutch pitching, according to FanGraphs. Those moments are what matter most, and whether it be at the plate or on the mound, the Cardinals have been a pleasant surprise to their fans so far. -- Rogers

There aren't 16 teams who have a better start to their season either but the national morons can't admit their idiotic preseason prediction mistakes. :x

True but do they base power rankings solely on current record or how they perceive the talent level of the team? And expected future performance?

If they are doing it based on expectations then yes I expect STL will hit a cold spell based on underlying numbers and some ahead of them in these rankings will also surpass them in W/L.

Yeah, I think those rankings still have a lot to do with season expectations. It's too early for performers to really move.

I prefer actual data AZC over some columnists "opinion" which is worthless.

These clowns had the Cardinals losing 90-100 games and now they have egg on their face.

National guys have underrated the Cardinals for decades!

Fools gold, folks. Enjoy it while you can. If you don't dial up your expectations to unreasonable levels you'll still be able to enjoy this rebuilding season.

The good news is it doesn't matter one bit. The only rankings that matter are who wins the games and mostly who wins the last game of the season. Everyone else is an also ran.

I think it's fine to dial up your expectations on what you are literally seeing and still enjoy the season no matter if they fall.

But right now they are proving national press and a hell of a lot of locals wrong with some very timely execution which can dwindle or grow as the season progresses, imo.

Memorial Day is usually a pretty good barometer.

At least early it looks like the Central's perrenial doormats have finally seen all those high draft picks and or acquisitions come to fruition.

Interesting to see how that shakes out over the month.

14-11 should be 11-14 with a minus 12 run diff
