That's the bugaboo. Major league pitchers aren't allowed to walk one batter per inning. He and Mathews seem to be on the same track- doing some good things, just walking too many batters.

80 pitches. 47 strikes. 4 innings. Looks like an MLB middle reliever, so far.

The story of the staff unfortunately.
Only 3 guys have under 3 BB9.

Four innings isn’t impressive. 7 K’s is impressive.

A good line for Martinez.

Starting pitching now days . 4 innings maybe 5. This put stress on the pen. What are teams going to do. Teams carry 13 pitchers. At this rate teams will need 15 or 16 pitchers on a staff. Is baseball going to add more roster spots. Teams need at least 12 position players. A back up catcher, an outfielder, and infielder
Do they go to 28 roster spots

Sounds like a good CBA negotiating point...

I remember growing up in the 1970s the standard pitching staff size was 10, some teams carried 9 and 11 was considered a lot. Teams wanted to carry 14-15 position players. What is interesting is with the DH now the standard, instead of increasing position player jobs, it actually had the impact of decreasing position player jobs by 1-2 per team over the last 20 years or so despite roster sizes increasing by 1 in total. Pitching jobs have went up dramatically and for the most part, we have a bunch of wild flame throwers that get injured and no one ever hears about them again. It is kind of sad. I wonder if in 20-30 years if there will be one pitcher from the 2020s anyone still talks about other than maybe the tail end of Justin Verlander's career.
