Essentially two wasted roster spots at the moment

Fermin doesn’t play and we don’t need 3 catchers if Herrera is actually going to catch semi regularly.

The 13th position player is hardly ever going to play anyway so perhaps having Fermin there is not a big deal, but it sure would be nice to have a RH power option off the bench. Perhaps they view Pozo as that but Oli just isn’t using him. In any event a Velazquez or Jordan might make more sense in this role.

Oh, and Crooks over Pages already please…

Its week 2 of the first year of a rebuild.

This is hardly the first year. Half of this young roster has been here and playing since 23 or 24.

Nothing is being wasted .

Oli has to start somewhere. He shouldn’t start 3 catchers the first two games. He doesn’t have to start 3 left fielders the first 6 games.

Fermin and Pozo will be deployed. The first week has given the coaching staff some info. You will see different looks soon.

Can we at least give guys a solid 30-40 games to make definitive decisions? 60 would be optimal but the"fast food" fans need instant gratification

Pages is not a good catcher or hitter by any means

This is the first year of the rebuild. Mo, in an effort to "compete" for the playoffs, put rosters together comprised of those guys because he was really bad at his job and for some reason you are really upset that he's gone.

Barring injury, Pages will be here at least until the trade deadline. Personally, I think he will be here all year.

If IH is DH you have to have 3 catchers.

It is 100% the Cardinals reasoning, it is just very debatable
reasoning. IF you have 3 C's you need to use them not place them under
glass. Yesterday when any kind of a hit would do was a decent example.
Something Pozo was decent at in the past.

Yesterday's game as a guide. Pages received 4 PA's. The most in the dreaded
catcher gets injured scenario ab's to be covered is 4. That was in a extra inning
game an if Pages goes down in the first inning. Sure it can potentially
shorten the bench. But that bench is being shorten every game if
that 3 rd catcher is used only in case of an emergency.

The silver lining if one exist, Pozo, Urias, and or Fermin being wasted is better
than if others were being wasted. They don't command as much playing time.
Saggese, VS2, Church, Gorman can all get their opportunities.

I'm glad he's gone, but you are just listing semantics. The fact that these young guys have been here multiple years already and we only have 1 significant newcomer on the roster (JJW) all argue we are not "just beginning" the rebuild in 2026. We've been "seeing what we have" for a while now and some of what we've already had will continue into the next competitive window.
