Re: Project Hail Mary
I hated it, but it's definitely a crowd-pleaser.
The amount of crass emotional manipulation at play here makes the Spielberg-Zemeckis style of moviemaking seem restrained. It's possible the score was designed by a team of neuroscientists who spent years testing the effects of pitch on the limbic system of rats. At several points, people near me in the theater were sobbing--I mean, gasping for air. And this is not a particularly sad movie.

I’ve not yet seen it (tomorrow/Monday), but I’ve read the book (which I enjoyed). You’re the first person I’ve run across with that reaction, however, I respect your opinion.
We can compare notes tomorrow.

lol this is exactly what I imagined it would be made into while reading. I stg I wasn't a quarter of the way in before I thought to myself "This is definitely going to clear a billion at the box office, and none of that money will be from my wallet."Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 18:52 pm I hated it, but it's definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Wow, tough crowd!
I just saw it. I thought they did a really nice job adopting the novel. There were details from the book excluded, as one would expect, but no real major plot points. It hit the major beats.
I liked both very well. Your mileage may vary!

Re: Project Hail Mary
Here's a nitpicky detail that bothered me.
So Grace is the only American on this team of scientists. Whenever they show a shot of all of them working or making decisions, it's like a scene from the UN.
And yet, independent of the American's input, they decided to call this operation "Project Hail Mary"--because I guess all those nerds from Nigeria, Japan, Germany, etc. are huge Roger Staubach fans?

Re: Project Hail Mary
I think the Hail Mary prayer has long been used by folks hoping for some divine intervention, like going onto surgery, encountering turbulence while flying or trying to fix a dying sun. And I think Staubach's pass was preceded in Marian references by Franco Harris's Immaculate Reception in 1972.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2026 20:06 pm Here's a nitpicky detail that bothered me.

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it.
Formulaic? I guess so, definitely aimed to get emotional reactions from the audience. At times it seemed like solutions were just a bit too easy to figure out.
My wife didn’t want to see it until she reads the book, so I went with a friend and at one point I could hear her shedding a few tears.

You have such a strange, pretentious, and frankly very stupid view of this film. You are saying this dribble just to be controversial and act like you are so much smarter than the average move fan even though the minor science in the movie likely went over your head.Dicktar2023 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2026 20:06 pm Here's a nitpicky detail that bothered me.

There is a reason why it is rated so highly on rotten tomatoes.
Also- the football play was named after the prayer, not the other way around.

Pretty sure Dicktar is just a lot smarter than most filmgoers... in addition to having seen a lot more movies and thought a lot more about them.
Spoiler alert: people who have seen a lot of movies and thought a lot about movies are harder to please with movies than general audiences, because they have developed higher standards through their many more hours of viewing and thinking about movies. It doesn't have to make you feel bad about yourself to recognize this!

He also seems to think of hail mary as only a football play... which calls into question his overall intelligence.

Re: Project Hail Mary
I'm aware it is a prayer, though I admit it never occurred to me Andy Weir had that in mind when he named his book. Maybe, in addition to his obsession with middle-brow pop culture references, he's also a devout Catholic. I doubt it, but it could be. I'm not sure the Virgin Mary is that much more popular with teams of international scientists than the NFL, though, so the question remains whether it's plausible that could provide the name for this project.WeWentBlues0819 wrote: ↑07 Apr 2026 11:37 amNo, I am using pretentious the way the dictionary defines it. To the rest of your comments, I'm not going to trade insults with you, but I've admitted that the movie has broad appeal and that my taste in movies is relatively narrow. I assure you, that's not a "pretense" I put on for the benefit of internet strangers. If anything, it's an affliction.
If you liked the movie, I'm genuinely happy for you.

Re: Project Hail Mary
Finally got to see this movie over the weekend. The movie pretty much followed the book. Was a bit too long for my liking though. It was good but not great but worth seeing in the theater. I think I may have had too high of expectations going into it. Comparing how I saw this in my mind while reading to how they portrayed it on film were pretty close to one another which doesn't usually happen for me for some reason. Both ships were bigger in the movie than I pictured them was about the only difference. Kudos to the author for that. I do however think The Martian was better.
