Roycroft over Gastelum? No way
Gastelum looks 5 times better. He has control and a devastating strikeout pitch.
Roycroft has only a general idea of where the ball is going when it leaves his hand.
Disappointing, but it's not like it's a major decision in this year of experiments!

Re: Roycroft over Gastelum? No way
Gastelum requires another 40 man roster move when they already have to add JJ and Velazquez
Its also not like Roycroft has allowed a ton of runs this spring either. He allowed his 1st run today in 8 appearances.
And its not like these are the final roster spots for the end of the year. If Gastelum pitches well in AAA then im sure we will see him at the majors sooner rather than later.

+1 gastelum pitched at AA last season and had a 4.02 ERA no harm in letting him start at AAA there will be a lot of movement up and down in the bullpen if he is pitching well at Memphis he will work his way into itvegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 13:54 pm Gastelum requires another 40 man roster move when they already have to add JJ and Velazquez

I hope the org. adopts the idea that nobody skips AAA unless they are a generational talent.
The only names I can think of that skipped levels and it worked out was Alberto J. Pujols, and Trevor Rosenthal.

Lots of guys pitching/playing for jobs.
Have to start somewhere. I figure if someone tears it up at AAA they’ll find a path to the majors.
I hope I’ll have to eat crow on Roycroft.
To me he was awful last season.

Yea I’m right there with you but I don’t worry too much about relievers you never know with them from one year to the next. The cardinals traded Sosa for Jo Jo people melted down on cards talk because Jo Jo was hot garbage with the Phillies he turned into one of the best left handed relievers in baseball. Some People didn’t know why O’Brien was on the roster he had a great year. Fernandez looked good in 2024 has looked like garbage since then. People melted down over the Granillo for Soriano trade because Soriano has been hot garbage in the big leagues he’s looked good in spring and who knows he could end up being this seasons Jo Jo

It seems like the high profile moves the Cards make for relievers don’t work and the insignificant ones do!Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 16:02 pmYea I’m right there with you but I don’t worry too much about relievers you never know with them from one year to the next. I think the BP is shaping up as a strength!

I can't wait to see how many scream and cry when Roycroft does what Roycroft does. It's not that big a deal though,

I don’t think they will want to start Gastelum’s clock this season, unless they are within making a post season appearance.
Probably the same with Baez.

I don’t think it’s so much starting the clock as it is he had a 4.02 ERA at AA last season hasn’t thrown a pitch at Memphis and they probably aren’t just going to skip him a level and create a roster spot for him based on 4 spring training innings

I would agree with that, but what I’m saying is, later in the season, even if Gastelum is pitching well, they aren’t likely to recall him.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 21:43 pmI don’t think it’s so much starting the clock as it is he had a 4.02 ERA at AA last season hasn’t thrown a pitch at Memphis and they probably aren’t just going to skip him a level and create a roster spot for him based on 4 spring training innings

Re: Roycroft over Gastelum? No way
Ok. He has 3 seasons in the minors. 10-9. 3.66 ERA and 1.186 WHIP -- and oh yeah, 191 Ks in 140 IP. And in that one AA season with the 4.02 ERA, he struck out 92 in 62 innings -- with a 35.4% K%, and 6.5% BB%. So I'm not worried about a reliever's ERA when the peripherals are that good.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 21:43 pmI don’t think it’s so much starting the clock as it is he had a 4.02 ERA at AA last season hasn’t thrown a pitch at Memphis and they probably aren’t just going to skip him a level and create a roster spot for him based on 4 spring training innings
Roycroft? Career Minors = 4.47 ERA and an awful 1.585 WHIP. And his brief stints at MLB last year were nothing short of horrific = 5.56 ERA and 1.584 WHIP.

They obviously see something in roycroft they like and have more information than we have and luckily bloom fromClassicO wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 22:19 pmOk. Everything I’ve heard isn’t one to skip players levels and probably wouldn’t do it based on 4 spring training innings so I’m okay with the choice roycroft wont be around long if he isn’t producing

Re: Roycroft over Gastelum? No way
Gastelum not being on the 40 man roster probably hurt his chances now. Keep it up . He will be here before long
