Something needs to change with Missouri basketball
They have been so inconsistent in different important aspects. Box out, helpside defense, defending threes, dribble lane penetration. The offense is stagnant vs certain defensive schemes. Poor off ball movement and ball movement. Free throws, etc. What's strange is some of these things are very good at times, some times they are abysmal. Talent, alone, doesn't insure big time success.

They just need to pay more for better players.

Re: Something needs to change with Missouri basketball
Inconsistency can be evidence of lack of talent. They went into this season expecting Ant and Mitchell to be their two best players, with Pierce a complementary piece and Mack hopefully adding some threat on the drive...and after that, hoping that the portal players would step up and be better than their history showed. Ant went into a season long funk, which wrecked much of their plan. Only Stone, about their least impressive portal addition other than Northweather, turned out to be useful. Fact is, Gates deserves credit for getting this collection of mediocre or worse talent plus Mitchell, to the tournament. Would anybody on the team that played significant minutes in the last month be a starter on any Power 4 team that's still in the tournament, other than Mitchell and maybe Pierce? I don't think so.
Gates needs to figure out some things, for sure. And the first thing he has to do is score big in the portal for next year, because otherwise it's depending upon Crowe and the other recruits to furnish most of the scoring...their only significant returnees, assuming they all return, are Pierce, Robinson, Barrett, and Burns. Unless one or more of them really improve over this year, they are going to need three starter quality transfers at least.

I thought Phillips Jr. turned out to be a good portal pickup. Who is going to fill Mitchell's shoes? That's the big issue for Gates going into next season.Rvrartst wrote: ↑21 Mar 2026 20:36 pmInconsistency can be evidence of lack of talent. Yes, that's the way it's works. When you have more talent than other teams you consistently win more. Do you not understand sports (or life).

I won a lot of basketball games as a head coach. Talent is very important. Especially, superior talent. But there are many other aspects involved in putting together a tremendous team that is consistent. You don't seem to have the capacity to understand that.

I heard St Monica's closed their school.
Is that why you used the past tense?

Re: Something needs to change with Missouri basketball
On how he'll remember this season: "I'm pretty difficult on myself. I'm hard on myself when it comes down to coaching. I don't think any coach could have brought the team to this place based off of where we were, dealing with the injuries that we dealt with. So I pat myself on the back at the same time."
That cannot be your post-game speech after losing again in March. You're paid big bucks to overcome injuries and players having off-nights. Problem is, you didn't win any battles in the portal last year. Stone and Phillips worked out, but nobody was after either of those two players. It can't be as simple as money, because too many programs with less cash to spend than us filled their needs.

You're joking. Anyone that know sports knows that more talent wins more often. That's the starting point. You can do other things to improve on your win percentage but having better talent is step 1. Get over yourself.Shady wrote: ↑22 Mar 2026 10:39 amI won a lot of basketball games as a head coach. Talent is very important. Especially, superior talent. They do need to pay more. They need to rally the funding.
But they also need a coach who can relate and land recruits and NIL guys and tell them Columbia is the place to be to grow and prosper and have them believe it.
THAT'S Dennis Gates.
Give him the time to do it.
