Potential 2027 rotation

We know a lot can change. There may not be a 2027 season either. Nevermind that.

Do those 5 names look like a good rotation? It seems plausible that they would be the 5. To me, it looks like there's a chance we will have a decent rotation in-house. Then you'll have Cjintje, Clarke, etc shortly after. Maybe those guys will be tough bullpen arms if they can't translate consistency as a starter.

I'm optimistic about Fitts. Mathews will be solid if healthy. The top 3 I think are fairly safe bets to be MLB starters by 2027.

All have question marks but my biggest question is Doyle. He has to develop an effective second pitch and get better control. Has the most to work on from those on your list IMO. But it could happen.

I hope to see that splitter develop into one of his staples. We saw in the post season Logan Gilbert and Kevin Gausman rely heavily on the split and just how effective that pitch can be. Couple that with a high octane fastball and a curveball and we’ll be on to something.

That’d be awesome if May proved to be healthy and thrives here. He’s from TX, his nickname is Big Red, it’s almost too good of a fit. I’d love to see him perform his way into a contract extension and take over as the Ace of the staff. Would be a pretty cool development.

Out of that list I really like Tanner Franklin. His fastball is just unreal, talent you can't teach. I see a young Roy Oswalt when I watch the clips. I know Oswalt threw a good curveball. I think Franklin is more of a changeup/slider guy for the offspeed pitches.

Cjintje, I see a good chance of him becoming a very durable RH 2 or 3 starter.

The others, have obvious injury concerns that may limit them to bullpen use (Clarke) or are very far away and unknowns that this point (Fajardo). That's how I see it although the upside is definitely there.

Dobbins is what, a depth piece?

I'll take a stab here at an extended 2028 SP depth chart, when most these guys are probably going to be in the picture.

1. Doyle
2. Liberatore
3. Cjintje
4. McGreevy (a #3/4 but very solid)
5. Franklin (1/2 upside as he develops)
6. Fitts (good stuff and good starter build, I like him)
7. Mathews (health + FB command = #2/3 starter, otherwise likely a LH swingman type or multi-inning high leverage reliever)
8. Dobbins (don't know much about him but sounds like a depth piece primarily)
9. Ixan Henderson (I don't know, we have a lot of lefties already. I guess with good health he could easily pass mathews on the SP depth chart)
9. Clarke
10. Fajardo (wake me up around 2030, we'll see what comes of this guy... right?)
11. Chen Wei-Lin

The three at the bottom to me seem to me like very good luxuries to have out of the bullpen, assuming the names toward the top are able to secure 5 rotation spots. Imagine Chen Wei-Lin as a closer. Although, it would be hard to unseat a guy who has sv(anson) in his name from the heir apparent closer position. Maybe Chen would be a good 8th inning guy, a hard throwing right hander like Trevor Rosenthal.

I do like this idea. You could always trade him and sign him again. Other teams have done this (Chapman with the Yankees).

In order to recover and become a serious playoff contender I think C. Bloom is going to have to go outside the organization to find a true TOTR starter.

W. Jocketty was able to do it when he found both C. Carpenter & A. Wainwright, a CY Young winner and a multiple time Top 10 finisher in Waino.

Hopefully Bloom can replicate at least one of those two great moves by Walt.
