It's the standard stuff. It's the official litany of excuses. They should hang it in the locker room.
"Marmol is better than people realize."
Does that mean he's good?
"Well, he has a winning record and he got teams to the playoffs."
Yes, years and years ago, two of his teams had winning records and made it to the playoffs. Does it matter what the team did in those playoffs? Does it matter whether the choices he the manager made were any good?
"Well, he's great with young players."
Players like Walker, Gorman, Carlson, and TON? Should I show you the pitcher's list?
"Well, he's been working with flawed rosters."
It's easy to say those rosters with Walker, Gorman, Carlson and TON (should I show you the pitcher's list?) were junk after all the prospects failed at once. But we might also be curious about WHY all those players failed at once. Seems like maybe, just maybe, there was a culture problem.
"Well, yeah, but that problem was in the development, not at the ML level."
I think Oli Marmol disagrees with you. He's talked about siting helplessly while his veteran player ostracized younger players, and how younger players won't take his advice or obey his orders (to steal bases, for instance). Seems like maybe the problems aren't just in Memphis or Springfield, no? Seems like the guy in charge here has no real answers or leadership, but friendly advice to take or leave. I'm sure the young players love him, as far as that goes. He's not going to keep them longer, or make them come in earlier. He's not going to raise his voice. Does that make him "good" with young players? Quite the opposite.
"Well, I just like him because he's on the radio a lot. He seems nice, so everything bad that's happened isn't his fault, and when any goes right I'm going to say IN YOUR FACE, HATER!"
Now we're being honest.
Note: I didn't say Steven A that's a sports opinion guy on TV My Steve A. is bald and over 80 if that helps.
Though, now that I think about it, I know a couple of other guys I could have this same conversation with. To maintain their privacy, we'll just call them Bernie M. and Randy K.

Unlike Marmol, TLR lost more games in his first four seasons with the Cardinals than he won.Banner29 wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 19:14 pmOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 18:44 pmHe wasn’t great but He did get results though olis results aren’t good but hey the players are buddies with him soalw80 wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 17:49 pmShildt was a raging a**hole who people hated working for. I guess that’s all that matters
TLR was never Freddie Friendship either but another one that got results.
I often wonder if Shildt was just that bad, or if it’s been over blown because today’s players/younger coaches are just weak as h**l

It depends on what his objective is. Money and job security I’d say he has played it (bleep) near perfectly.45s wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 20:27 pmAgree…..but marmol has been agreeable to a fault…Alex Reyes Cy Young wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 19:40 pmBut we are talking about the Cardinals.... Think it was Bill Parcells , who once famously said , 'Every coach hired in the NFL knows he will be fired sometime . You are hired to be fired ! Just the nature of pro sports. Look this past year , John Harbaugh Ravens Pete Carrol past Super Bowl coach of Seahawks was fired by Raiders . Just the nature of the occupation . Not an indictment of their ability to coach.
Baseball is pretty much the same. A Skip Schumaker gets hired by the Marlins ..very agreeable guy and highly thought of .. He gets fired and now gets another job. Numerous examples .
Skip wasn't agreeable at all. He spoke up and voiced his displeasure when Ng was going to have to report to a new POBO. Therefore he wasn't agreeable. He was let go.

Over the last 50 years, Joe Torre holds the longest stretch going 4.5 years without a playoff appearance in StL. Oli probably tops that by end of this extension.

Bernie M. A guy that scammed people with Ponzi scheme .
Randy K is tougher.. know a Randy Johnson and Randy Macho Man Savage but neither is Randy K.
Re: Insider thinks Oli might be here for 10 years ! Wow !
Marmol is the fall guy for the Cardinals when everybody else, including Ownership, gets a reset including whoever changed the food menu for 2026, and Marmol does not? All Marmol's show and responsibility. Everything Cardinals including All of the impediments. Then he was severely underpaid
Re: Insider thinks Oli might be here for 10 years ! Wow !
I thought he was rated by players in MLB as the last manager they'd like to play for?ramfandan wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026 14:42 pm Thought this article by Jim Bowden would get some reaction on CT so posting it .
Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently commented on the extension and what it means for the Cardinals going forward, while also giving Chaim Bloom in the front office high marks for pulling it off.
Marmol extension is huge for Cardinals
"This is a GM and president's dream of a young developing manager to run a young developing team. He fits that mold," Bowden said. "I think he's a 10-year manager, and what I mean by that is I think he's one of those managers that's going to spend a decade managing the same team. In three years, they need to be in the postseason, they need to be contending. I want to compliment Chaim Bloom for not having him have to be sitting there with his job on the line this year."

PS Was just thinking this is the start of Year 5 so he is half way there lol
I guess that doesn't factor into this extension.

Oli being there for 10 more years would be a great thing for the Cardinals because that would mean that they turned this thing back in to a winning franchise. No way on earth Oli has another 10 year stint if they are winning 78-83 games per year. Ten more years means that Oli evolved into one of the top managers, free agents once again view St. Louis as an attractive destination, and the Cardinals are winning 90+ games.

With today's expanded playoffs Torre would have made the playoffs in each of his first 3 seasons. 4th best record in NL in 1991. 5th best record in NL in 1992 and 1993. He did more with less given the ownership. 17th, 16th and 23rd payroll in those first 3 seasons.JuanAgosto wrote: ↑02 Mar 2026 23:42 pm Over the last 50 years, Joe Torre holds the longest stretch going 4.5 years without a playoff appearance in StL. If oli is here for the next ten years that means the cardinals are winning and being successful and made a couple of deep post season runs at least so I hope it happens. If the cardinals aren’t winning and successful or making significant progress he will be gone after 2
