It was not his choice.
Not possible he is that stupid.
Yes, he is. Unless Marmol has pictures of BDW with Boy Scouts, there is simply no other explanation. Maybe the owners didn't want to fire Marmol, but extending him beyond the coming strike year, with an option for 2029?

He's Bloom's guy.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Bloom was ordered to accept the Marmot extension.
He knew that before he took over for Super Slo Mo.
Zero chance he did not know about DeWitt's commitment to The Marmot.
It was the first thing he asked about - because that would be the first thing ANY incoming POBO would ask about from any owner with any team.

The uncertainty of 2027 and what an ew CBA will look like has BDWJr in 'defensive" owner mode.

He's slashed his payroll to the bone.

He wasn't going to pay Oli this season to sit at home nor was he going to pay a new, experienced Manager multiple times what he's paying Oli for the 2027 season which could be compromised (management gets paid during a lockout), now likely the 2028 season as well.

Until he's prepared to raise the payroll, Oli is Dewitt's guy....a person grateful for the job who won't rock the boat (re: complain about the lack of payroll to add players).

This move is all BDWJr, fits his "re-build" plan to a tee.
Self-evidently and indisputably true.

1. Every lineup will have LH hitters back to back. If there are 3 or more LH hitters in lineup, they will be ordered in a way that invites LH RPs in later innings.
2. At least five pitchers will be used in every game.

That might explain why Marmol was retained this year. But there is zero reason to extend him through 2028, or at all, unless he's really Bloom's guy.

Accept the truth: Bloom is actually stupid enough (or averse to conflict enough) to keep Marmol long-term.

The Marmot has been working for the Cardinals since childhood.

That is what he is paid to do, and he is happy to receive a paycheck for doing so.
No experienced, quality manager would ever take the STL job based on what DeWitt currently has planned.
DeWitt knows that.
Bloom knows that.
And, above all, The Marmot knows that.
Therefore, it us nothing more than a plural marriage of convenience.

That line of reasoning doesn't make sense, Mel. Probably not even to you.

Bloom's a dum-dum. It's that simple. And/or he's afraid of a headstrong manager after his experiences in Boston.

There was briefly hope that the new GM would not be as out of touch with the fan base and the organizational messaging as Mo, where it looked like he was going to make a clean break with the past.

That moment has come and gone.

2027... if you believe the drumbeats could be a long lockout so it would make little sense to hire a new manager only to pay him multiple times what Oli is making, to sit out while the lockout is going on.

Nor would it make sense to hire a new manager for 2027 if BDWJr isn't going to spend any money (and he won't until he has a full year under the new CBA so he can workout his business plan).

I thought all along Oli would get a one year (2027) extension, the second year could likely just be his reward for being a loyal employee.

If BDWJr decides 2028 is the time to spend on payroll again and if he and C. Bloom don't feel Oli is the right guy going forward, then firing him after the 2027 season or during the 2028 season won't be difficult given he's one of the lower paid managers in MLB.

Your assessment of Bloom is off base and inane, this is Dewitt's call all the way.

Why so many haven't figured this out by now is baffling, BDWJR makes the calls for this team..............always has, always will.

If it's just the strike on their mind, why extend him to 2028? or for that matter, at all?

It's not like he wouldn't be available when the strike is over. You'd probably be able to find him where he should be now: In the breakroom at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Or you could pick any Memphis Redbirds coach, and pay him even less than you currently pay Marmol. For just as good a job.

There's just no way around it. It's not the salary, it's not the strike, it's not DeWitt. It's Bloom. He's Bloom's guy.

I’m in agreement with you on this Rock. The one thing I might add is, I don’t believe Oli will ever be fired. When the time comes that DeWitt feels a new Manager is needed, Oli will be reassigned within the organization, and given a nice title to go with it.

This tells me DeWitt and Bloom plan to "rebuild" specifically through the draft. Losing gets you a chance for better picks. Oli has proven capable in that area.

DeWitt does not seem interested in spending in free agency. He will continue the poor boy act. But hey, he is raising ticket prices! And you can buy the cards app for TV viewing! What a tone deaf group our ownership is.

I didn't despise LaRussa, but is against the law to not like a manager who has led a team to a .502 winning record in his four years?

With the first year being .574 and 2 of the next 3 below .500?

When I don't see any improvement on the field and a lot of the same mistakes made over and over again?

It might just be the fact that modern FO’s devalue the Managers position to the point where it doesn’t matter. They dictate from the Master IPad and puppet follows. He can talk to the media fine and as long as he stays in line they’ll continue to extend him

The thing with Tony’s teams is some of his losing teams may have had a lack of talent or been derailed by injuries but they always played good fundamental baseball and did not beat themselves. The same can’t be said for olis teams
The same players that came up as rookies three or
Four years ago and were poor fundamentally are still poor fundamentally. The other thing when arenado said the past couple of years the team came to the park hoping good things happen instead of expecting things to happen means oli is incapable of instilling a winning attitude into the team. He may not be the big problem with the team but he isn’t the solution either
