Regarding JJs baserunning, I just saw a replay of him being thrown out at 3b when the Cardinals scored their run in the first.

Was this a matter of him trying to draw a throw to ensure that Burleson scored from second, or was this bad base running by JJ?

Any thoughts?
Poor baserunning play.

Burleson was going to score on that.

The play was right on front of him.
He did score, yes?

He would have scored anyway.

True. The rook made a mistake, no worries as I think his baseball IQ is good.

I think both. I think he was trying to take a throw away from Burleson trying to score from second on the basehit but I’m not sure it was needed. The bad part was it looked like he was almost giving himself up so Burleson could score. He kinda just stopped in the middle which didn’t help matters much.
It looked to be a miscommunication between JJ and Pop Warner waiving Burly in. JJ kept coming around 2nd and then shut it down when he realized that was all for Burly and he was hung up. Probably just trying to do a little too much there. That’s what spring is for, Go Cards!
Good analysis on that play ! Unless Pop is pointing for JJ to stay at 2nd ( a 3rd base coach has two hands lol ) He can waive Burly home and then with the other hand signal JJ to stay at 2nd.
A factor that is being missed here is that there were 2 OUTS in the inning. The 3rd base coach A. is going to send Burly home even though the ball was hit sharply to left . (you don't want to hold that runner up , if posssible, with 2 outs 98 times out of 100 you send him home. Can't count on next batter who could end the inning with any type out .
As you said, it didn't look the best as the LF did throw the ball on a one hopper to the 3rd baseman in plenty of time to nail the runner at 3rd.
I would not call that a base running blunder on JJ's part. A runner should not stop on his own there with 2 outs in the inning. He did not run thru a STOP signal by Warner.

IF there was 0 or 1 out in that same scenario , Warner would have probably signaled for JJ to hold at 2nd so not to run them out of a possible bigger inning.

JJ had a bad fielding error as well. JJ shouldn't stress and think he has to turn things around by himself.
