I hunted most of my life. My family had game-deer, rabbits, squrrels, birds-at least once a week.
I've shot them all and never baited once. I have a conservation ethic.
Any moron can attract wildlife with food, and whack it. There is no skill involved whatsoever, and in the opinion of someone who has shot a lot of animals, no honor in it either. They call it "hunting" not "baiting' for a reason.

Colorado
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Minnesota
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
South Dakota
These states have taken decisive action to eliminate baiting entirely as a strategy for attracting deer. By banning baiting, the authorities are attempting to reduce the risk of disease transmission and improve the long-term health of deer populations.

Well said, there has to be an element of sport to it. Ethical hunters respect their prey too much to bait them. And if anyone says "ethical hunter" is an oxymoron I'll only listen if you're a vegetarian. I worked in a meat processing plant decades ago and can assure you harvested wild game had better lives than pen-raised animals.imetsatchelpaige wrote: ↑21 Feb 2026 13:51 pmGet off your preening pedestal. I don’t hunt and kill deer for sport if I thought of it as just a sport I wouldn’t hunt i hunt and kill them to eat them. I dont condemn those who hunt for sport but I don’t care about the sport. I hunt because I like the taste of deer everything else is irrelevant. I think it’s hilarious people say I hunt ethically because I don’t use bait but I use a rifle with a scope lol get real that’s not sport the deer have no chance. There is no such thing as hunting a deer ethically or fairly unless u creep up on them with a spear but people like to delude themselves into thinking hey I don’t bait but I set on a game trail with a .270 with a scope lol please save the condemnation. Even with baiting there is no shortage of deerMort Gage wrote: ↑21 Feb 2026 14:00 pmWell said, there has to be an element of sport to it. Ethical hunters respect their prey too much to bait them. Aren’t the number of deer shot a year limited for a reason?
If some people broke the rules, for instance, baiting, wouldn’t they have a better chance to get in a deer than the person that doesn’t?
I don’t think the deer has a chance if you see it and you have a scope. I thought the whole idea was being able to see it. Not tie one up in the barn all year and then go out and butcher it.
What if there were no conservation rules? Would that help or hurt hunters, harvester, eaters?

To hunt with bait where I live because the conservationists deemed it it necessary to control the population. If they didn’t control the population it would explode disease would spread the numbers would be impacted. Elsewhere the conservationists have deemed it differently. Like I said I don’t hunt for sport I hunt and eat what I kill. I don’t judge people who hunt for sport though and want big buck racks that’s fine their choice. Hunt legally smarter people than me or you have determined what you can kill and how to do it to keep the population thriving and I like the dude abide. I didn’t know why it was illegal to bait in some areas posters educated me why it is illegal to do it there so now I agree they did wrong they should be punished

When my friends talk about how great of hunters they are, I respond with, “you’re sitting in a tree with a high-powered rifle and a scope. Don’t sound much like hunting to me”.
I tell him to jump in the river with a knife they made out of stone in their mouth and come back with a crocodile. That’s hunting. Or kill a sabertooth tiger while wearing a loin cloth only using a spear you made out of brimstone. That’s hunting. Lol.
Re: Criminal Cardinals
Correct. I hunted in Illinois. The baiting which often is nothing more than putting out some corn is legal in 20 states. Its dumb they have laws against it. They other dumb thing Illinois has is if you own land in Illinois you can get a landowners permit and get a license. If his sons want to hunt with him on his property and they live out of state they cant without entering a lottery and hope to get picked for a license. I have seen often where the mother will get a permit and give it to a son so they can hunt with their father on his land.
