Re: First infield practice began with these four
Fermin I would think more of SS /2b backup .. Some speculation that Bryan Ramos could make the roster and backup 3rd base .. Of course Saggese is a choice for that but the team is also seeing if he can be reserve OF too. He may be a super utility at both IF /OF.
We will have to see how ST plays out for all those guys .

1982 team was the best infield defense I've seen and probably the best in the history of baseball.
Re: First infield practice began with these four
Agree, but the 2004 Cardinal infield was pretty good also. Also, other than Dick Groat's errors at SS the 1964 infield was also pretty good.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:27 am1982 team was the best infield defense I've seen and probably the best in the history of baseball.
Re: First infield practice began with these four
I've seen people dog Oberkfell because he didn't for power at 3B. IIRC, he was signed as a shortstop, and came up as a second baseman. He was moved to third to make room for Tom Herr at second.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:27 am1982 team was the best infield defense I've seen and probably the best in the history of baseball.
And yes, the '82 infield was a special group playing defense.

He led MLB in fielding percentage 3 time. Once at 2B and twice at 3B. I've seen people dog Lou Brock on this forum. Some people are just trolls.tgharris wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:34 amI've seen people dog Oberkfell because he didn't for power at 3B. IIRC, he was signed as a shortstop, and came up as a second baseman. Exactly as stated by most of us.
However I didn't like Oli's comments that JJW would be getting reps not only at 2B but also 3B and even SS.
Why put so much on the kid when he needs to be anchored at 2B?
He's NOT A SUP!

Because they really want him at third, numerous others Cant play second.rockondlouie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:58 amExactly as stated by most of us.

You can post that a million times BDog but it's not where he's going to play.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 09:01 amBecause they really want him at third, numerous others Cant play second.rockondlouie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:58 amExactly as stated by most of us.

JJW is a potential all-star 2nd baseman, something he'd never be at 3rd base.

I don’t disagree. I just think with his hype that he reminds me of Brett. I’ll take 5 years of Brett and easily forget Arenado.rockondlouie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 09:05 amYou can post that a million times BDog but it's not where he's going to play.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 09:01 amBecause they really want him at third, numerous others Cant play second.rockondlouie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 08:58 amExactly as stated by most of us.

To me he's more a C. Utley type than he is a G. Brett type, and he's going to (hopefully) be stationed at 2nd base for the next ten+ years!sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 09:07 amI don’t disagree. No argument. I think third becomes a priority. Sooner or later. The other n house options are who?rockondlouie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2026 09:12 amTo me he's more a C. Utley type than he is a G. I know you like Gorman?, but I don’t see it. I think he’d play a better second if anything.
