Post by edwin drood »

:P ofOne of the greatest actors of his generation. From To Kill a Mockingbird, to Twilight Zones, The Godfather saga, Tender Mercies, Apocalypse Now and Lonesome Dove - all superb.

He was 95 and died at his home in Virginia.

He was in so many great films, and one of my favorites of his is "The Great Santini". His performance is incredible in that movie.

Another great nights the dust. What an awesome actor
Robert Duvall, Star of ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Great Santini,’ Dies at 95

Statement from his wife, Luciana Duvall.
“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time,” she wrote. “Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.”

She continued, “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”

Duvall’s gruff naturalism came to define the acting style of a generation that included Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman in such films as “Network” and “The Apostle,” which he also directed.

And while he may never have been as big a star as DeNiro, his unshowy ability to fully embrace the characters he played earned him respect both from his peers and from critics. As Francis Ford Coppola once told the New York Times, at a certain point, it’s “hard to say the difference between leading men and great character actors.”

Here is an early cinema verite oriented film project Duvall developed in the early 70s - I thought it was unique & compelling, came upon it a few years back.

You can see his long affinity for rural life & people, demonstrated in his participation in various such roles throughout the years (TKAM, The Apostle, Sling Blade, the westerns) was no affectation, though his background by birth, early life & education, being the son of a USN Rear Admiral, was far removed from it. :

He did so much with so little in "To Kill a Mockingbird". No words, just facial expressions from started to a slight gentle smile.

I never realized that he went to high school in St. Louis at Principia School, back when it was located in North St. Louis, then graduated from Principia College in Elsah IL.

I love Duvall in Open Range. Especially the scene in the sweet shop. Buys expensive af Swiss chocolate and cigars to enjoy before the impending gun battle. Upon hearing that the store owner himself had never tried the chocolate, he shares a piece with him. Great scene in an otherwise average western.

You're right, that is a great scene. It drives home a vision of a reality where a person might be facing the prospect of imminent death rather poignantly.

Disagree about average. Imo it is one of the superior Westerns - at any rate, hasn't been a better one since. I love when Duvall is dosing them w/ the chloroform in the jail. He has a good time with it. :)
