What is the MIN offer you would accept for Kyrou?

Post by a smell of green grass »

As much as I'd like to move on from Kyrou (for Blues and Kyrou), I wouldn't just take peanuts.

I doubt that we get a valuable young winger in return from him. So my minimum would be...

Young D prospect, and 1st Round Draft Pick.

Just to lose his sorry, deadbeat (donkey) from the locker room, the bench, and on any forward lines not involving a power play (even then, his thoughtless turnovers that lead to short-handed rushes against...sheesh), I would take that - it would be great if the pick were amongst the first dozen.

I won't mind losing that tendency either, especially knowing that it's a 5-year long stick in the eye.

A 10-15 1st round pick or a top 4 RHD or a young Center prospect that’s floor is 3C.

Top 10 pick in this draft, or an A prospect with a small sweetener (ex: Hage), or an NHLer that’s projected to be top 6 forward or top 4 D. A late 1st and B prospects doesn’t cut it.

1st and a 2nd. Not saying that's all he is worth, or that's all Army should ask for. But I would settle for that.

The chance to reallocate cap space and shed a bad example is at least as valuable as the counting stats he can put up when he tries, IMHO. And he's not even putting those up this year.

I couldn't agree more!

Depending on where he goes, be prepared to be underwhelmed. Almost half of the GMs in the league now are former players in the league. Four are presidents of their teams or hockey ops. They are guys like Shanahan, Sakic, Neely, Lemieux so they know it it takes to play in the leaugue and what types of players are needed to win Championships. NONE of those GMs or presidents would want Kyrou. They know his kind.

Reallocating Kyrou’s cap space only matters if we plan on spending to the cap. Dumping contracts for cap space doesn’t really make sense if we’re 10 million dollars under the cap anyway. The other issue here is that you can’t get another consistent 30 goal scorer for 8 million bucks anymore.

Out of the rumors that have been out there so far Kyrou for Shane Wright makes the most sense to me. I’d prefer Wright + a 1st or another prospect but I’d make the deal if it was straight up.

I'd look at the Debrincat trade as a recent comp.

Ottawa traded RFA Debrincat in the Summer of 2023 (prior to the start of the 2023-2024 season) to Detroit for 2024 1st (which became 25th overall), 2024 4th, D prospect Donovan Sebrango (former 2020 3rd round pick) and Dominik Kubalik who was coming off four consecutive seasons of 20-30G and 30-45P as a former 7th round pick. From what I can tell, Debrincat had two RFA years left at the time of his trade.

I really don't see the Blues getting a massive haul for Kyrou as wingers don't usually command a huge premium unless they are a Rantanen level talent. I would say Kyrou profiles more like Debrincat than he does Rantanen.

so tl/dr

A mid to late first, current NHL player, and a couple of B prospects is probably the going rate, at which point, I'd prefer to keep Kyrou. As others have pointed out, his cap space is only valuable if you are using it for someone else.

We know what he is, and so does the rest of the league. My question becomes - what happens when he starts losing top 6 minutes and is replaced by younger, more willing talent? We've all seen his indifferent play when things aren't going his way. Is it worth keeping that attitude in the room among the younger players? IMO - you make a clean break versus poisoning the well.

I would look at a team like San Jose that is loaded with prospects. I would take a couple former 2nd rounders from them like Halttunen and LSW.

Other teams will undervalue Kyrou while Army will overvalue him. He remember that one time he could have got MT for Kyrou as the main piece going the other way

I understand what you would like from San Jose. But why would they have any interest in Kyrou?

Grier (GM and former player) was a power forward and played a heavy game. His team is stocked with young offensively skilled talent. He doesn't need a one way floater. He needs guys who hunt pucks. He needs D for transition and to fuel the speed. Hey. I'd love a crack and their talent. But I just don't see why Grier would be interested.
