I laughed out loud...
Never heard that one.
The Color Man commenting on the Olympic 5 on 5 rule for matching minors, made the point that this keeps Forward lines and D pairings fairly intact.
This will leave one Forward line, or D pairing a man short, however.
He went on to mention that this creates a better opportunity for those on the Fourth Line, or third D pairing to get more ice time- instead of keeping their place on the bench at the border of where the Defensemen and the Forwards sit. He called that player "The Grocery Stick" and once he explained that it is the divider that keeps my groceries separate from the person in front of- or behind me- in line... I got very tickled.

That's pretty funny...reminds of hearing Biz on Spitting Chiclets talking about his role most of the time that he actually dressed (vs being in the pressbox) was to open and close the door when players came off the ice at the end of their shift

There does seem to be a guy at the far end of the bench, who does just that- until he gets called upon for 8-10 minutes of ice time.
