Does anyone else think Church could be a great surprise?

Post by casey1024 »

I really like the kid. I'm usually wrong, but I like his tools. His speed is a mirror of Scott and so is the D. He looks like his bat to ball skills are superior to Scott"s. Would like to see those two battle it out and may the best man win!

Maybe Church wins the LF job out of camp with Noot on the mend. Him and Scott would completely shut down the left side of the OF. We’ll find out soon enough, games on the schedule next Saturday. Let’s get this show on the road.

No

Like VSII he's got a good glove and speed but in limited action he seemed overmatched at the plate.

But I hope you're right!

Great point but in my long, long life I've seen a ton of good players overmatched in their first cup of tea. Then again.....there's Gorman and Walker. Who knows?

For sure

The most famous case (and in NO WAY am I making a crazy comp) was the great W. Mays who only had 7 hits in his first 51 PA's!

Define what a "surprise" from Church might be.
.250 BA / 310 OBP and 250 20206 Pa's?
Something lees, something more?

I like what I’ve seen. I had hoped he would get more chances last year. Look forward to seeing him in ST.

He was a bit over matched at the plate last year during his cup of coffee. Hope he has a good ST and if so, actually gets a chance to play. Oli tends to have favorites and buries guys at times. Hopefully whoever is playing well at the end of ST actually gets a chance in Noot's spot. A kid needs 50 ABs before you bench him.

100%. Church is the far superior hitter to Scott and has a stronger arm. Scott has more speed and a better glove, though not by as much as you think.

Church is on my list of guys who step up this year, along with Saggese, if given the proper chance.

If given the proper chance. Indeed. One of my many beefs with Marmol is his complete blindness to playing the hot hand. A kid might go 3-4 and then be benched the next day because the matchup wasn't what the ipad dictated. I believe our esteemed manager was quoted last season as saying he wanted a young player to savour the good game on the bench the next day or something like that. Too lazy to look it up, but I remember it. So I hope if Church or Saggese or whoever has a good game, he isn't benched the next day.

Exactly! He has ZERO FEEL for the game or for who is playing well. He is a COMPLETE 100% BOZO. He is an embarrassment to the Cardinals franchise.

Which leaves the same question.
What are your expectations?

decent floor. good defender who makes contact at the plate.

I believe Nathan will play his way into the lineup with some frequency.

Not a high ceiling (ahem, cough cough (Baez)

This is where having a rebuild helps. It takes the pressure off and maybe some will step up and others will definitely fade out. Many players their first year looked overmatched and then know what to do next year. While I dont know if Church will amount to much, I do see in minors he had solid production, great defender with a cannon of an arm, solid speed, and can get on base as does not strike out much. Can he be more than a 4th outfielder - time will tell, but definitely would love to give him a chance
