Where is best batting spot in lineup for Wetherholt ?

Post by ramfandan »

JJ batted leadoff quite a bit in the minors. In past years, Oli often puts the newbies in 7th slot (at least to start out and then moves them up as they do better ). The math shows that batting leadoff (No. 1) vs. 7th in a lineup will have the No. 1 hitter getting 100 to 120 more plate appearances in a 162 game season.
Walker batted .276 his rookie year with the Cardinals . A .276 leadoff hitter getting 100 more plate appearances could translate to 20 + more hits (excluding the walks in those 100 ) .
One thing if JJ ends up batting leadoff is that as the lineup gets thru the first couple innngs, Wetherholt could bat immediately after VS II (if Oli keeps Victor at 9th spot). Those times that VS II does get on base and attempts a steal (he has high success rate ) there would be a few more times that JJ could come up with VS II in scoring positon for Wetherholt.
I think leadoff would be an ideal spot for JJ. Others may want him elsewhere. Your thoughts ? The more at bats he gets in 2026 the better for the team is how I see it .

Not really worried about where he hits in the lineup just don't jerk him around the order continuously.

Burleson should hit third and Herrera clean up. Neither one at this point are true MOBats but that's where we are.

If Marmol decides Scott will leadoff than Winn will likely bat second. If not I can see Wetherholt in the one or two spot.

Barring injury he should get 500 plus AB's and let him establish himself at a spot in the lineup.

As players are hopefully acquired through this "rebuild" to round out a competitive lineup Wetherholt can then find a natural fit and not be shoehorned into a spot.

We all know how Marmol likes the left-right-left-right thing. So, if Scott stays at 9, then Winn at 1, Wetherholt 2 , Herrera 3, and Burleson 4. 5-6-7-8 are a little dicey, but say Saggese, Gorman, Walker, ?, then Scott. The 8th spot could depend on who’s catching that day, or who the opposing pitcher is that day.

I would think Wetherholt if he plays to the level we hope should take leadoff eventually. That’s what I’m hoping for.

The correct answer is he should hit in the 2 hole from Day 1.

Marmol will undoubtedly get it wrong!

Thanks for your reply . WIth your No. 2 hole suggestion, was curious who you have batting leadoff ahead of JJ ?

Lots of options.

Noot, if healthy.
VSII if he can show to get on base more with his new approach.
Winn will be Marmol's choice.
Bryan Torres is my dark horse candidate.

He needs to prove he can hit major league pitching before we anoint him. Everybody had Jordan Walker as the future clean up man and look how that has worked out

Nobody is annointing him . He is going to be the 2nd baseman and we are discussing where in the lineup might be a good spot for him .. there are 1 thru 9 to choose. Where would you put him ?

IFFF he actually hits in spring training, then yes, put him in the 2 hole and leave him there.. If he is scuffling, then put him down in the order until he starts hitting and then move him there.

That could be the plan as if he is scuffling , Oli would be thinking don't put any added pressure by having him lead off.
One thing about JJ that is good to hear came from Cerfolio in an interview. He said if JJ is 0 for 20 , you would never know it by his demeanor. He remains the same , calm guy, whether on a '0 for whatever streak ' or on a hot streak. Very even keel type guy. That's good for a major leaguer for they all have hitting slumps. JJ understands you just keep plugging away .
